Multitude of electrical problems

Post by stephen1974 »

Before I take it to a specialist, I thought I would bring this up here and see what people thought.

2003 car.

Problem 1: When the lights are on, the indicators only blink 3 times then shut off. The high beams and fogs lights will also switch off randomly. There is a button on the control column, if I hold that in, all works fine, and everything stays on, but I have to physically hold it in. I assume its a busted switch but does the whole unit need replacig?

Problem 2: Reversing lights not coming on 95% of the time. They do work as I can occasionally get them to come on, just very rarely now. Could this be related to problem 1? I dont think so as pressing in the aforementioned button does nothing.

Problem 3: Radio remains off when I start the car, where normally it would come on automatically. Not a big deal, but just another electrical problem.

Problem 4: Horn doesnt always work.

Is this likely to be 4 seperate problems, or will there be one thing to look at and if so. what?

Not sure of it would help to know which button, but there are only 3 (4 if you have cruise control), so which stalk is it on? If it is not on a stalk, it is probably a previous owner's modification, and I'm tempted to suggest that you just connect the 2 wires permanently together, but that may just be masking the real problem.

With things like this it often turns out to be a bad earth, so check all earths for good non-corroded, tight, bright metal contact.

2003 car will use the multiplex system so you'll need a COM2000 unit with the same part number .. there were several different types .. controls the stalks, horn, airbag, etc ..

Its a button on the end of the left hand stalk and is marked as auto. TRied glueing it in place but it seems as if a little bit of pressure still needs to be applied to make it work.

That button is not supposed to stay in if pressed. It's function is to put the lights into auto mode, i.e. they come on when the car thinks it is dark. To use it, have the ignition on, the lights switched off (position 0/Auto) and hold the button pressed for 4 sec. The auto mode will be remembered until the 4 sec process is repeated. You could try that, but I don't hold out much hope.

It may be as Gazza said, you need your COMM2000 repaired/replaced. There's a chap in Manchester who repairs them - he can advise you if your problem is likely to be repairable.Link.
