My money is on starter or connection. If you can get a multi meter on small terminal of starter solonoid, Get someone to operate key to start position and see what voltage you have there.

I assume your starter motor is 20 years old. They don't last for ever.

I was thinking of changing the starter myself if possible. For someone with very basic knowledge and basic tools, is this doable?

Why are you saying Starter Motor?
It is your money of course. & time.

As I said before, if you get the ticking and flickering in the first position (Acc), it is nothing to do with the starter. The key has to be turned to the 3rd position to involve the starter.

Looks like I just don't know enough about cars to diagnose this problem myself. I was just hoping to avoid getting anyone in as money at the moment is in short supply. But having a dead car is of no use to me anyway. Thanks for everyone's input/advice.

Suddenly out of the blue my '51 plate 206cc won't start up.
I've never forgotten how to start a car I had previously been driving :hmm:
