I only put premium fuel in now and with longer runs this has helped.

I'm still having the problem with overheating but tracking down the problem. It looks like the chap I bought the car off has hidden a small accident on the drivers side which explains the missing wing liner I just replaced. I'm thinking the fan and/or fan resistor has been damaged.

It's now a labour of love. Thanks for the advice.

Fan should only start if it's overheating in traffic, so check that out first ...

Hello, just an update. The overheating problem continued after flushing the radiator and would rocket from 90 degrees to the red. The red STOP sign would come on but then reduce to 70 degrees after three seconds before doing it again about ten minutes later. I asked an electrician who said it sounded electrical as the car was not actually overheating.

I was told to disconnect the temperature sender sensor cable and if it the fan came on then the sensor was fine, if not the sensor was broken. After the fan didn't engage I replaced the sensor and tried the same test and the fan engaged. I'm going out today for a run to see if that has sorted the overheating problem.

So far so good it hasn't got anywhere near 90 degrees.

I'm not getting any cat or pollution faults either, that must be just a coincidence?

Ours tends to run at 80 degrees (1.6 engine). Faulty electrical components on these cars can throw up spurious warnings. Sort out the relevant fault and the irrelevant warnings can disappear.

I hope that's the case. With fault finding I start at the cheapest fix first, it was going to be thermostat and battery next.

Hello again, yes it was a coincidence the catalytic converter fault returned again. I bought a cheap £13 diagnostic reader and the code said misfiring. I looked up the code and it said it could be spark plugs, coil pack, ECU and a few sensors. I started as usual with cheapest fix first, spark plugs, now no engine warning lights at all, no beeping just faultless driving for the first time in months. Thanks for all your advice.

Well done - they're supposed to last 40k miles I think but I renewed ours at about 24K when the car was about 8 years old. It improved the running about town.

Thanks, I replaced the NGK with Bosch Super FR8ME Spark Plugs. I've looked on different sites and some favour one over the other but the Bosch seem to work for us. It may be another coincidence but she just seems to be better all round so maybe there was a misfire.

I was so close to selling her but the love affair continues.

My ABS light randomly comes on. Then goes off. TBH I'm not bothered as the brakes work. Driven for years with no ABS on cars and don't need it now. Its nice but ... Probably a loose wire or something as it happens so randomly. Our Skoda does the same with the engine management warning light. I just assume its telling me the car still has an engine in it as everything seems to work fine. :D

Our ABS light came on a couple of times but I found the offside wheel arch liner was missing so I replaced that and so far it's not come back. I think it was rainwater getting in there.

I'm OK driving with the engine management light on but my wife gets stressed.
