Wheel Nut Key

Post by summers »

As mentioned in a previous post, i'm a total newbie and know nothing! I've just booked my 2001 Peugeot 206 for a service a week on Monday (they collect and return the car, seemed ideal). However on the e-mail i received they need the handbook and wheel nut key, should i have one?

Only need key if they are locking wheel bolts. Not sure why they would ask for handbook, Are you sure they don't mean service book so they can stamp service record?
Cheers Col.

My mistake, yes Col, just read their e-mail again and it is indeed the service book that they need! Sorry for sounding so green, but what do locking wheel bolts look like?

Depends if you still have the original lock nuts in which case its a large metal piece with 4 pins sticking out of the end which locate in the wheel bolts and a nut shape on the end to put the wheel brace on.

On the wheel bolts, the locking ones are circular rather than nut shape. In the rim will be the four holes the pins fit in.

But you need to check the wheels and you may also find the nuts have plastic covers so not obvious at first glance. So check those first or you could be looking for not reason as a previous owner could have swapped them for normal bolts.

The locking nut will normally be in the glove box but sometimes they are kept with the jack or in the end of the wheel brace. Or just left rolling around in the boot so check inside the panels at the rear under where the boot shuts and the wheel brace is stored.

I might even consider ditching these locking nuts and just go for standard bolts.

Still have to get them off without trashing the wheels.

Maybe use the wheel nut key?!? before the key gives up, which has been known.

The point of the thread is "where is the wheel nut key?" ... ;)

In that case I think one is in the boot within the wheelnut box and the other is in the door pocket.

I have had my 206 about 8 month. Within weeks of buying i lost the wheel nut key. I went to a few tyre garages and nobody wanted to toutch them because the locking nut is designed to sheer off and are realy hard to remove. So i then went to peugeot and they wanted £25 a corner to chisle them off, also wouldn't be responsible for any damage caused. I found a little french specialist whitch is now my regular mechanic. I left the car with him for an hour, cost me £25. He must have had a key. I now have 4 standard nuts in each wheel. You would have to be a nutter to go round stealing pugeot alloy wheels these days.

Or maybe he sacrificed a cheap socket to get them off.
