Hi all
We have a 206 hdi 1.4 and recently during this cold spell the engine will turn over but won't start all the time, and we notice that the glow plug light doesn't always come on as we turn the ignition. However the times that the light comes on the engine starts first time.
Should the glow plug light come on everytime we go to start the engine regardless of the temperature outside ie cold outside or not?

Sounds like a relay on the way out. Our 206cc is a petrol, my Golf is a diesel.
Here's a thread from a VW forum where the symptoms are about the same as yours.

You'll need to find out where your relay unit is on your car. (Yours won't be called a relay 109 by the way - that is the VW item). I believe you'll find it on the l/h front side of the engine compartment where it will probably be mounted onto the rear of the battery tray. To remove it you should disconnect the battery -ve lead. Unscrew the retaining nut securing the relay control unit to the battery tray, take care not to lose the bolt from the battery tray.
Unscrew the retaining nuts and free the main feed and supply wires from the base of the unit, then disconnect the wiring connector. Remove the unit from the engine compartment. Replace the relay unit with a brand new one. Refitting is a reverse of removal, ensuring that the wiring connectors are correctly connected. Don't forget to reconnect your battery -ve lead afterwards.
Let us have some feedback in due course please.
Best of luck, Ron

I personally would use my Peugeot main dealer. However, you could try GSF or a good motor factor I suppose, if you prefer. The thing is, if you buy from the main dealer you know it should fit perfectly. I have found their prices reasonable for other electrical parts e.g. reversing light switch, which brand new was cheaper from Robins & Day than someone selling on eBay secondhand. I'd have expected the glowplug relay to cost about £45, but that is a guess.
