Newbie with potential purchase....possible problem?

Post by tammy6788 »

Hi there,
It was
I am looking at buying a 206cc, have seen a couple but have seen one that I am considering buying the weekend on eBay.....

It is a 54 plate 1.6 Allure, 52k, FSH, MOT July, Tax til Jan in bright red. It was listed with a buy it now of £3800, but I have haggled down to £3300.....

The only thing that is possibly putting me off is the fact that it has a broken driver's wing mirror. Apparently the owner snapped it trying to fold it in and it is now held on by duct tape as it would be hanging on by the wires otherwise. She says that the glass and electrics are okay, but I have been told that it is about £170 for a new one??? Are they fixable or would it need a replacement, and if so is this the sort of thing that I could do myself or would it need to go to a garage to be fitted? I'm just a little worried if there are motors and stuff that could be damaged or would it be as simple as just the wing mirror......?

The car is also due a full service....

All things considered, does this sound like a fair price, or is it too much considering cost of replacemet miror/service?

Any help with the mirror thing would be appreciated as well so I can decide if I should go ahead...

Thanks

Tammy

She says that it hasn't had them done as far as she is aware, and thinks that they are usually done at 72k or 75k? However it has main dealer history she is going to ring them and check tomorrow....

The cambelt on the 1.6 engine should be good for 10 years or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first. So it should be OK until 2014.

£3300 sounds OK but it is winter. Offer £3000 cash and I bet you'll get it. Spend the change on the service that is due.

Good luck Tammy. Read the owner's manual front to back. Particularly about the roof operation!!! Most problems are self inflicted by new owners who haven't read the manual. Make sure you get the "key" for the locking wheel nuts.

Ask if it has any optional extras e.g. wind deflector, space saver spare wheel. It'll save you money if you decide to buy them later. Better that you have them than someone else has the opportunity of selling them after you have bought the car.

Found out today she has sold it to someone else who has apparently given her the full asking price. Gutted

Dont suppose anyone knows of one for sale for up to about £3300? Can't really go any higher.

Also which is genuinely better, 1.6 or 2.0? There seem to be loads f 2.0 for sale pretty cheap - are they a lot thirstier than 1.6????

The 2.0L engine is zippier than the 1.6, but is prone to more problems (might explain why there's so many for sale :S - out here, sellers use "highly sought-after 2.0L" or "top of the range 2.0L model" to make them sell faster). not sure about the difference in fuel consumption, my guess is that the 2L would use a bit more than the 1.6 manual but not much more...
