passenger side swimming pool!

Post by tasha86 »

Hii

happy new year everyone :)

i was horrified recently after putting a bag in the back of my car to find it had turned into a swimming pool :( i moved the mat to find so much water on the floor and back seat. I have read solutions saying about putting vasoline on the seals and that should help and im willing to try anything!

Im just checking as i am a bit worried about opening the roof half way and it getting jammed as i know you are not supposed to stop it mid way...am i being silly?! :hmm:

thanks

If you do decide to stop it mid-way do NOT turn off the ignition, do not touch any other controls, be as quick as you can, and when you restart the roof make sure that it is in the same direction as it was going when you paused it.

You can buy a jar of clear silicon grease at a plumbers' merchants.

Not that I'm aware of.

Scary, isn't it !

When I'm operating the roof I make sure no-one undoes their seat belt, nor touches any controls. I'm paranoid about the roof. I'll only operate it with the engine running too so the battery doesn't get discharged when using it. Never given me any trouble though, but our car is garaged most days and night so it only suffers the weather once a week on average - hopefully good weather too.

Well I got round to servicing the roof seals today by rubbing in silicon lubricating grease.

I had to have the grease out anyway. The driver's door was becoming hard to open and investigation revealed that the rubber seal had become very sticky at the bottom. I cleaned this up and rubbed in a coat of silicon grease. That has cured it. While I was at it I did the passenger side too. Hopefully they'll be good for another 7 years.

As it was a fine day I thought I would grease the roof seals too. They haven't leaked but looked very dry and seemed to be going hard. I started the engine, lowered the windows, undid the roof catches and, by reaching through the window from outside pulled the switch up to start lowering the roof. When it got to a convenient point where I could reach the seal in the hinged part of the roof I let go of the switch. An alarm sounds at this point but I quickly greased the seal thoroughly and rubbed it well in. When done I reached through the window and pulled the switch up again in the same direction to continue the roof opening until it was fully open and the procedure was finished, confirmed by the chime.
With the roof fully open it was then a simple matter to grease the front seal at the top of the windscreen section which was fully accessible of course.
With this all done I thought it was a good opportunity to treat the leather upholstery to a fresh application of Autoglym Leather Care Balm. It looks and feels as good as new now. A quick clean of the inside of the windscreen glass, and a vacuum clean of the mats and dash etc. and we're all ready for spring. The car has just sailed through the MOT test again and taxed for another 12 months is all ready for open top motoring again now that spring has arrived.
We had been thinking of changing it as it is 7 years old now but my wife can't think of another car she would rather have. We might take a look at the new VW Up! though, but I can't see it comparing favourably with the 206cc Allure, can you?

If you do choose to quit it mid way do not convert off the key,do not contact any other manages, be as fast as you can, and when you reboot the ceiling create sure that it is in the same route as it was going when you stopped it.
I agreed with GrandadMonkey you can buy a jar of obvious rubber oil at a plumbers' suppliers.
