Diesel Knock

Post by genoff2000 »

Hi All

I changed my diesel pump on my 206 1.9d LX 2001 last week.

Since changing the pump i am getting a rather loud diesel knock now.

When setting the timing I locked the engine up, Flywheel, Cam and pump.

After all was tight i turned engine over with a spanner about 8 times and was able to lock all the points back up again.

What could it be.

Cheers

How did you set timing? You said it was DW8 with Lucas pump, so I'm assuming it's the early non electric pump DWLP11 (Which is engine code WJZ) Did you check plunger lift against label on pump?
It sounds too advanced from what you have said.

You are correct, it is a Lucas Pump DWLP11.

I set the timing using an M6 bolt in the pump, M8 bolt in the Cam and 6mm tool in the flywheel. They all locked up and pins fitted into each locking point.

I followed the instructions using these guides

repair-206/206/info/gb/B1EG10K3.HTM

http://rk-planning.p2.bindsite.jp/_src/ ... .sst.1.pdf

I did not have the Tension measuring equipment tool they talk about.

What is the plunger lift against pump? Can you explain a bit more.

This knocking noise is not happening all the time. When it idling it could be fine and then other times when idling u get the diesel not.

I changed the regulator/type device on the front of the pump at the bottom (has the wire going into it, not the solenoid one 17mm) from my old pump and it made a little difference but not much.

Thanks for the help

Not sure they're adjustable on the 12's as timing is by ECU.
Was there a label on the pump giving plunger lift?
Have you still got the old pump, is there a label on that?

If you can wait til tommorow I'll see if autodata gives any info. I take it the pin lift sensor is connected to No 1 injector OK? Does it make any difference if you disconnect it with engine running?
Cheers Col.

Hi

I only got round to disconnecting today.

It made no difference to the engine. Yesterday for about 5 minutes i had no knocking at all while driving then it started again.

Has same the morning for about 2 mins and no knocking.

I also disconnected the plug going to the regulator (at the side at bottom of pump) on the diesel pump, not the stop solenoid, it did not make one bit of difference if connected or not.

I put a multi-meter on the pins and i am seeing 12v on one and .87 on the other. i do not know if this correct reading.

Cheers

This is starting to get tricky. The wire on the injector is the pin lift sensor, and is used by the ECU to help determine the amount of timing advance / retard needed, which is in turn carried out by the advance solenoid on the side of the pump (that you called a regulator)
It is unusual to have intermittent knock.
You sure it's not an injector or big ends or something else?
You may have got some dirt into an injector when you changed the pump. If this is the case, try some injector cleaner, if that doesn't do it, with the engine running (& knocking) cover each injector in turn with a rag to catch the spray (wear eye protection & nitrile gloves) then crack open the pipe nut on each injector in turn so that the fuel spurts out of the union. When you crack the union on the faulty injector the knocking will stop, tighten it and it will start again.
Once you have identified the culprit, replace or refurbish.
Cheers Col.

That was the next thing for me to try. I will give that ago over the next couple days and see if i can find which injector is causing the knock.

Thank you very much for all your help and advice.

Unfortunately lots of people come on here with a problem, we help as much as poss then they disappear never to reveal the results (which would help the people giving advice to know if they got it right or not and help those people with similar problems get to the bottom of it)

Give us some info and we'll have a bash at your issue.

PS: I suspect the above was an injector.
