Transmission Worries

Post by alexbillbridgnorth »

Hey guys sorry to bother you again.
Last week I got my dealer to pay for a new clutch and the car feels so much better though very rarely my gearbox wont go into reverse gear fully and I have to put it in neutral and back in reverse again and when putting it into 1st gear it feels notchy the car has always been doing this from day one (happens more so when cold) also I'm worried they have only replaced the clutch plate and not the rest such as thrust bearing and pressure plate. While I was waiting one mechanic asked the other what the bearing looked like and the mechanic said not the best I over heard them when they were working on it I was waiting, though due to the fact I didn't pay I didn't get the receipt to see why they had done :( When the clutch is disengaged the engine is deadly quiet though when the clutch is engaged the engine makes a very low volume rattle from the engine is all this normal with a 206CC?

Please help :)

There is no synchromesh on reverse gear so what you describe is normal.

Similarly when putting it into first at rest from cold, the gearbox oil will be at its thickest which could cause the symptoms you describe.

If they have repaired the clutch under warranty they will have put right only what was faulty which is all they were obliged to do. You can hardly expect a 10 year old car to be as new. The design life of cars these days is reputed to be 7 years.

Hi mate
Thanks for you quick reply, I know I don't expect it to be like new but I also don't want anything to clonk out on me at the moment (after buying it I have no money) :(
Ah right so when the clutch pedal is up and it is making this noise this is not normal? You see I know the thrust bearing was gone when I took it in and so was my clutch I did tell them this though I'm still hearing this slight noise when the clutch is up though when I push it down it disappears?

Thanks again.

What the thrust bearing went on mine they was noise whether it was pressed or not and a terrible smell. The clutch pedal also was vibrating quite badly. It was in a sorry state. I had a new clutch and thrust bearing fitted and had no further problems,no noise/smell/vibration. Hope you get it sorted so you can enjoy the summer.

Yeah me too, I think part of the problem is that the car has never had a gear oil change. Might attempt this myself as this website makes it look rather easy: 206gti. net/gear-oil/
Is it worth giving the oil in the gears a change?
Though this is for a standard 206 GTI and not a convertible, does anyone know whether the layout is the same I have a 1.6 Allure?

Thanks guys for your help

It'll be a gearbox bearing making the slight noise. We had a 205GT that did it, never let us down and we had it for years.
