206CC 2002 not starting

Hello all, :wave:

My 2L 2002 Peugeot 206CC with 116k km (French car) cut out on me on my way home from work a couple of weeks back and hasn't started since. I've had it trailered back home and dad is working hard to get it going again but so far we're not having much success.

It turns over fine but won't start. Oil level was a bit low, so that's been topped up (No oil in water and vice-versa) Battery has been fully charged and the BSI reset following the correct procedure. The car's now in Eco Mode. Fuses have been checked and are ok. Won't start using the spare key and I don't have a big engine cut off switch to reset under the bonnet.

I'm starting to think that it's something along the lines of a corroded wire between the ECU and the BSI, sort of on the same lines as this thread: viewtopic.php?f=23&t=14297&start=15 (Ok I'm not allowed to link to julieannejones1's topic)

To check it out, would anyone be able to point me in the direction of a wiring diagram? Or suggest something that we might have missed? :(

Hi Cactus and welcome. You really need to get it on a diagnostic machine and let us know the fault codes.
There are so many things that can prevent the car from starting, that you would be just guessing and changing parts willy-nilly (probably costing a lot more in the long run)
Don't worry about the eco mode, that will disappear as soon as the engine starts.

The post you refer to has an immobiliser fault in the display. Have you got a similar message.?

Hi Capncol, (I was hoping you'd answer.)

We did get a list of codes scrolling down on the display but I wasn't there at the time and can't tell you what they were.
We've also managed to download Peugeot Planet but have had trouble getting it communicating with the car. It turns out that our cable was defective so another is on it's way from China as we speak. So I can't give you an answer at the moment.

I understand that Eco Mode will disappear once the car starts but would the car being in Eco Mode have any impact on the diagnostic?

Hi Grandad,
It should be. We used the starter motor to 'bump' the car into position for the trailer to get it home.

Diagnostic will work fine with eco mode.
Grandadmonkey has a point about the belt. If it has broken it would cause the non start.
There would be a bit of a give away in that you would have a lack of compression. Ask your dad if it spins over as if there are no spark plugs in when he cranks it.
Do you have any warning lights or messages other than "eco mode"?

A broken cam-belt wouldn't stop you doing that. So it is worth a check methinks. At least it will rule it out.

Ok I didn't realise that the engine would still turn over with a broken belt. I'll check it out tonight when I get home. Thanks for your input. Would looking down the oil filler cap to see movement when it's turning over do it?
Although it seems to turn over normally, it could be a possibility.

No other warning lights (apart from Airbag but it has been like that since I bought the car)

You won't see anything down the oil filler hole as there's a baffle in the way

And cams are turning OK? Only asking because I've seen a cam belt that looked fine but if you tried to turn the engine the belt didn't actually move ... due to 2 inches of missing teeth ...

Take the spark plugs out and turn the engine over manually with the cam belt covers off just to be on the safe side.


When it cut out I take it is was sudden and it didn't sound like metal-hitting-metal? if it went quietly it would suggest an electrical failure of some kind. Check the connectors at the coil-pack, etc.

Well done Gazza82, the correct answer was spark coil pack and the wires leading to it which had fused together. Found it yesterday and after a trip to Mr Peugeot's Garage this morning, it's all changed and the car's finally going again... Problem fixed!

Well done my Dad! :thumbs:

You can see (just about) the damage towards the middle of the picture. Wires had rubbed and melted together.

Now does anyone know an easy way to change gear linkage bushes?... :facepalm:
