Intermittent non-start problem

Post by Moonie »

Hi everyone, I'm new to the site & would be very grateful for any advice please for my 2004 206cc 1.6 allure petrol.

Bit of history first: 2nd owner 2 years, presently 52.5k miles. 1yr ago horn went off on it's own while driving & finally died away after 10 embarrassing mins! Fault was comm indicator stalk unit & a reconditioned unit that I sourced from a reputable place was fitted by local small garage. Car fine until 3 weeks ago: problem 1 - passenger airbag fault warning when passenger present or any weight was put on passenger seat; problem 2 - car intermittently not starting. My job involves visiting peoples homes & only seemed to happen after short journeys. Cold starts seem fine.
Whether it was the battery or not, I fitted a new one today as it was ready for one (following instructions given & did a bsi reset) as it had the original 10yr old one still on. Voltage on removed battery was 11.7v so clearly it was on its way out.
This seems to have cured the passenger airbag warning thus far & the old battery/shopping weight on the seat didn't cause a problem which it would have done before the new battery.
But....the warm starts are not cured. Turning the key gives nothing but a fuel pump whirr...no lights on dash, no attempt to start, almost like the immobiliser has kicked in. After several tries of no response it eventually starts without any coughing.
Very odd & I wonder if anyone has experienced a similar fault or offer advice. Should I try another bsi reset in case I did it wrong? Could it be an immobiliser problem?
It's due MOT on 21st March so I could ask my local garage to put the diagnostics on, but I wonder if there is a simple cure. Technically I can service the car & do fairly simple repairs following a Haynes but I'm far from a mechanic!
Thanks so much...
David

That's ok David.

The elderly battery would have been the culprit for the random fault warning lights so you were spot on with your decision to renew that. Hope you fitted the correct battery - i.e. the 190mm tall one for the 206cc, rather than the 175mm tall one for the hatchback, otherwise you could find you'll have intermittent connectivity issues.

Welcome to the forum by the way - good to have you with us.

Yes, I got the 190mm one (Bosch S4)!

Thanks again for the kind welcome, I'll repost with the outcome of the new starter motor :-)

Well done David. Hope you have no further problems.

Don't forget that your cambelt (timing belt) is due for renewal this year if it has not already been done. If it should snap it wrecks the engine. It is recommended to replace the water pump with fresh coolant and new belt tensioner/pulleys at the same time.
