Temperature gauge high and stop light on permanently
Hi, I was wondering if anyone can help with this fault. The car is a 2004 1.4 petrol 206s. The temperature reading is on max from start (even when engine is cold) The stop light is on permanently. The fan runs all the time.
I have checked the coolant sensor and the relay wiring as I have heard these can get corroded. All seems in order. The person I acquired the vehicle from had a garage look at it and they connected a 1.5v AA battery between the temperature sensor and battery negative. This makes the gauge go down and the stop light go off. I was told that the garage thought there was a wiring loom problem.
My investigations have led to the same conclusion or that there is a problem with the ECU.
Does anyone have a correct wiring diagram for this vehicle. I have one from the internet and one from the Haynes manual and they are different. One shows the temp sensor being connected directly to the temp gauge and the other shows it connected to the ECU. Also there is a thermal cut off sensor on the cylinder head which is not shown on the diagrams.
I suspect the temp sensor is connected to the ECU but to check the wiring I need to know which pins it is connected to in which plug. Can anyone help with that? There is a grey wire and a brown wire leaving the sensor.
If the sensor is disconnected the fault is the same.
Any help would be appreciated

Hi, I am not sure, how do I tell? The car has air con. There are three plugs into the ECU. I expect the relevant one is the third (the one nearest to the steering wheel) because if I disconnect it and switch the ignition to the on position the temp gauge does not move. I am still not sure though whether the temp sensor is connected directly to the ECU or if it goes via the temp gauge.

Should be on the sticker on ECU. Code reader should also tell you.

I don't think my code reader shows the ECU type. I dont see any label on the ecu. Can you tell from the chassis number VF32CKFWF43799605

Sent rasorhead all the info held on servicebox on his car, but no mention of ECU type/model. It's going to have to be connected to PP2000 or something that recognises a Peugeot ecu properly I think to get that info.

Thanks Gazza. A good pro scanner such as Launch/ Snapon/ Macscan/ Bosch etc: will do it. They will give all the ECU id required.

Thanks for the data. Here is all the info that is on the labels on the ECU. Does this help identify it? If so do you have a circuit diagram for the cooling system?

Hi, thanks for your help Col it is much appreciated. I traced back the wires from the temp sensor to the ECU. I noticed that the thermal cut out sensor in the side of the head is connected into the same wire back to the ECU. This is not shown on any circuit diagrams that I have seen.
I now have 4.9 volts measured from the brown and grey wire from temp sensor to ground, but why are they both at that potential? Shouldn't one be connected to ground?
I also traced back the wiring from the fan relays to the ECU. I reterminated the relay connections as corrosion was causing intermittent results.
I still get the stop light and temp gauge high. When the ignition is on position 2 (without engine running) the fan is not on. When the engine is started the fan is on high. When ignition is switched off the fan runs at low power permanently. The relays seem to be working as expected for a high temperature condition. Can you confirm this is what I would expect?
Does this fault require the Ecu fault code to be reset in order for the fault to go away? The code reader I have only reports MIL codes and the engine light is not on in this case.
Any ideas on what to look at next?

It sounds to me like the ecu is receiving an overheat signal and the ecu is responding correctly.
I would be looking at the sensor side of the system, ie, what happens with temp sensors disconnected?
If you can get hold of a pro scanner that gives live data, then check what temp the ecu thinks it is seeing.

I measure 11k ohms across the sensor. Isn't that the only temperature input to the ECU? I have checked the terminals to the sensor by measuring the resistance on the wires, not just across the sensor itself. I measure continuity on both wires back to the ECU. With temp sensor disconnected the fault is the same.
What about the 4.9V I measure on both brown and grey wires to ground? It seems that one of these wires should be connected to ground otherwise how does the ECU identify the change in resistance?
Do you have a map of the internals of the ECU?
