Oil change - how to? (2003 206cc 1.6 S)

Post by k1mzzz »

Hi everyone,

I have just bought a 2003 206cc 1.6 (S) and am looking to do an oil change as it looks like the oil has seen better days.

I have purchased oil and a replacement filter (non OE as Halfords didn't have any OE ones!), however, am not sure where the drain plug and filter are

Has anyone got any images/annotated how-to guides? The filter I have purchased is a paper element one - is this correct? I've never changed one of these before, only the screw ones, so am not sure whether I need more than the cup wrench I currently have.

Could anyone offer any advice on this? I have had a hunt around for workshop manuals and youtube videos, however, can only seem to find ones for the GTI, 2.0 HDI and 1.4/1.1 models!

Any other advice for an oil change? I'm using 5W30 fully synthetic oil - is this good for our engines? Would I need to add/change a washer when replacing the sump plug?

Any help much appreciated! Many thanks,

K

Oil filter is in a black plastic cover towards right of engine as you look under bonnet.
It has a hex on end to unscrew and you need to change rubber ring seal.

Oil should really be 10W40 fully synth. Shame Halfords still give wrong advice.

Haynes are poor where the 1.6 16v engine is concerned ... But you might find a Citroen covers that one! The 1.4 HDi engine has the same type of filter if that helps.

Thanks for your reply gazza82. I will inform Halfords of the recommendations and change the oil for 10W40 tomorrow - thanks for the advice. Where would I obtain the rubber ring seal from? Sort of thing Halfords would source?

I've just had a look at the Euro Car Parts website and can't find any rubber ring seals - the filter comes with a ring seal that is about the diameter of the filter - is this what you are referring to?

Also, will the oil drain plug require a replacement washer/o-ring?

Sorry for all of the questions, but once I drop the oil, I can't use the car, so want to make sure I have everything I need before starting!

Thanks,

Kim

The rubber ring should be in the same box as the filter.
You will need the right size drain plug key as it has a square hole. A new sump plug washer is nice, but many re-use the old one successfully.

Thanks Capncol; do you know the square drain plug key size? I'm looking at the Sealey AK659 kit - would this suffice, or do I need a more comprehensive kit?

Yes a how to would be good. Just don't overtighten the filter cap.
Cheers Col.

Super! Thanks :D

So to confirm required bits and bobs:

Square drain plug key set for removing drain plug
10W40 fully synth oil x3.5l
Hex key set for removing oil filter
New oil filter + ring/seal

Thanks,

Quick tip. If you find the sump plug leaks a little, just undo a few turns (not enough to let the oil out!) and wrap some PTFE tape (plumbing supplies) around the thread. Always works.

Some owners have found that they suffer from low oil pressure if they haven't used a genuine Peugeot filter. Some aftermarket ones have been known to collapse. I always buy my replacement parts from our local authorised Peugeot main dealer (Robins & Day in Leicester). You get a new O ring with the genuine filter.
