I must admit to missing the "old days" when you could tune by ear, not plug something in.
Progress, plus not sure my back would take it any more (courtesy of a Sherpa gearbox in 1989...).

Still got a dwell meter somewhere. I used to have a Crypton tuner something like this

I sold it on ebay a few years back as I just didn't use it anymore (except for gas analiser occasionally)
I think I only got about £40 for it

NP ... building an MG Midget A-series 1275cc engine at the moment .. that has two thrust washers but on the centre main, not the end one like the 2.5. I rarely start a car with my foot on the clutch .. but I have no idea what the previous owners did ..

There are some new cars where apparently you have to .. asking for trouble in my book!

I still remember my foreman leaning through the window and starting a Maestro van on the lift after someone has changed the clutch (VW box, easy). Except said someone, not me, had left it in gear. In those days we had steel topped benches in front of the lifts.....
A-Series, lovely engine. Do they still have the exception in the Testers Manual for emissions?

Hi,
I never dip the clutch to start my 2.5. Have a LHD steering column so I can turn the key and check its out of gear at the same time. Don't like floating cranks and moon shaped things in my sump. LOL.

I still have a dwell meter somewhere too. A timing light and a SPQR tappet adjuster! Will use the SPQR when I can find it as a bit tappaty in the mornings.

Cheers,
Iain.

I was always taught it takes the gearbox drag off the starter. If you had a Cortina like mine in the 80s with a dodgy inertia every little helped.....

.....and I've not seen an SPQR for more years than I care to remember. I do still have the tool for adjusting 1256 points off cam.....
