Gear Stick Rock

Post by jeffluent »

This is north-south on acceleration and overrun and is worse in lower gears as you would expect. This is the 2l engine and I had the large rubber engine stabiliser underneath replaced which improved but did not eliminate the rock. Engine mounts?

Change them all, by the time the rear one starts giving way the gearbox mount is usually perished and the top one torn away. Does the engine try to lift or rock when you move off?

I'm assuming the engine rocks rather than lifts from the gear lever behaviour. My wife declined the request to stand in front of the car while I reved the engine and slipped the clutch.

:rotfl: I dont blame her

Item number 10 and 13 are the mounts. I think 13 will be well hammered they usually are, as the lump rocks it forces the mount apart from the inside and makes it wider and wider which makes it sloppier. :hmm:

If number 10 is torn you would hear the engine banging as it kangaroos when driving off fast although I believe some mounts have a strap over the top to prevent it jumping out and causing the rubber to tear prematurely

There is a large alloy mount top left as you look in the engine bay .. you need to support the engine if you plan to take it off to check ..

The other is under the battery tray and on the gearbox.

The engine mount, left hand side as you look at it, was absolutely shot.Split about 90% of the way through but looked perfect.Havn't looked at gearbox side yet.
