Air Bag Warning Light

A few months ago I made the mistake of putting ASDA petrol in my car. My car did not like it one bit.

Went to take the car out and it flashed up Catalytic Converter Fault and she felt she was only firing on 2 cylinders. Switched off, waited about 10 minutes then tried again. It then cycled through all the faults, settling on Airbag Fault. Engine felt fine so went off to do the shopping. Came out and airbag light had gone off.

Stayed off for a few days then came back on intermittently and finally decided to stay on.

MOT is now due (overdue so car is off the road temporarily) but I need to get her through her MOT as we rely heavily on the car.

She is a 2002 (52 plate) 2L petrol engine.

I have read through a lot of the airbag posts and will be checking under the seat/fuse box by my knee later today.

I'm not a mechanic by any means but know the car will definitely fail the MOT on this

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

With mine it was the Comms 2000 unit behind the steering wheel that has the indicator stalks on it. One of the cables had developed a fault over time. Got a working replacement from Ebay for £25. I used Peugeot Planet software on an old laptop to diagnose this properly. A decent garage will probably have a diagnostic tool that will do the job. The cheap bluetooth ones don't give enough detail.

Thank you Rhume. It could be the Comms 2000 unit because the indicator stalk is a bit loose and the indicators dont "tick". Other things don't work properly either. E.g. when I indicate the headlights turn themselves off and on so I just switch my headlights on all the time - stops that problem. Don't want other drivers thinking I'm flashing them on.

One of my late husband's friends knows a mechanic who will have access to diagnostics. Unfortunately, friend went on holiday so have had to wait. Friend also says if I have to SORN the car for a while (we don't have a lot of spare money) I can park it on his land until I can get it through the MOT. Have to see what else it fails on.

I have all the MOTs going back 5 years and last year's there was no advisories on it. I bought the car late last September. Really like the car and don't want to scrap it unless I really have to.

And the good news is:

The airbag light is now off. Fiddled with the fuse box and found a couple of slack fuses, fiddled with the green box under the seat...and...started the car and no airbag light, nor is the computer display showing "Airbag Fault" now

What still isn't working is the heated rear windscreen and the CD changer so suspect there is a broken wire(s) somewhere. That can be sorted out at a later date.

Next is to get her booked in for her MOT, hopefully later this week or next.

Fingers crossed but much happier now that light is off. Still think I need to replace the Comm unit though.

The CD changer should work from the buttons on the radio fascia, without input from the COMM 2000. The HRW does not involve it either.

If your only two remaining problems are those, no need to change the COMM 2000.

I suspect the CD changer not working and the heated rear screen also not working is probably a broken wire somewhere. Doesn't seem to be any power going to the CD changer but would need a circuit tester and I haven't got a clue how to work one. CD changer I'm not worried about because there is a single CD player up front. Would prefer the heated rear screen to work. The heated rear screen light on the heater console doesn't come on either and the wing mirrors don't defrost so that could be a fuse somewhere.

Comm unit is faulty. Indicator stalk has a bit of play on it and has a habit of turning the headlights off and on when indicating (get round that by just leaving the headlights on all the time manually). Also, indicators have no "tick" and headlight warning doesn't work if I forget to switch off the headlights.

Mostly niggles but the one thing that was worrying me was the airbag light because that would have instantly failed her on the MOT. Thankfully that is resolved now.
