In preparation for my return to the UK in September I've tried a couple of on-line companies (Elephant and Axamotors) for a quote and they both ask for details of motoring offences for the past 5 years. Now i may be wrong but the points i've 'accumulated' (3 points for bog-standard speeding - SP30; and 3 points for 'encroaching over double white lines'- TS20) should be voided after 3 (or is it 4) years...The first points were Feb 98 and the second Feb 99. Surely it is a little unfair if i am being 'punished' by an insurance company for offences that are deemed no longer relevant by law? Any thoughts? I realise my take on British law/insurance may be a little off kilter so would appreciate some comments from those of you more knowledgeable than I on these matters...
Thanks
Greg

greg,

all insurance companies seem to ask for convictions for a minimum of 5 years - some 10 (CIS i think).

it is annoying as they are supposedly spent after 3 years.

i have an SP30 from 02/00 and will have to declare it again when i renew in december as it will be just under 3 years but i'm wondering whether i will declare it the following year if i get it removed from my driving licence.

anyone else did this and not had a problem when making a claim ???

Declare it - it is soon to be European law that all insurance companies will be able to share data on people.

Better own up or you could get stung, or even worse refused insurance.

But I sympathise as I got 6 points one very unlucky day

I know it seems unfair when the convictions are spent to have to declare them but it really isn't worth the risk thinking I won't bother, as "I don't believe they are relevant". If the worst ever happened and you had to make a huge claim or you were getting sued the insurance companies have departments who will go through your original application with a microscope to see if they can get away with voiding your insurance and not paying out!. Plus as already mentioned they all share a common database and it will be permanently recorded on there that you made a false insurance declaration.
