Willie

We bought a cancelled order which was sat at Warwick Wright Brent Cross. Having agreed a p/ex on our old car and paid a £500 deposit, we were pushing for a reg no. so we could get insurance/road tax and pick the car up.

They then phoned to say Peugeot were going to fine them £1000 for selling a cancelled order and they wanted us to pay it! We refused and threatened solicitors, they gave in!

This was something to do with stopping dealers making up ficticious orders to get cars in stock, avoiding the then quoted 16 to 20 weeks on new orders.

Make a fuss, don't give in!

I remember reading somewhere in the small print after I had ordered mine that they can. When I ordered mine it was old spec and when it arrived it was multiplex although the dealership didn't charge me the extra I think they could have if they had wanted to.

Burge,

You've reminded us of another thing! When agreeing the price, we thought the list for a 1.6S was £14480, but the Sales Exec told us it had gone up to £14695 because of the 2002 spec changes!

When we got the car, it was old spec. Afraid they were still going to try and sting us for the extra £1K, we cut and ran with the car.

same thing happened with me. When I ordered mine it was priced at £15995 (2.0l SE) and when I actually went to pick the car up (6 months on) it was priced at £16295 (or something like that) AND they put up the price of wheel arches from £159 to £179-or was it the SP grill? Can't remember now, anyway they put the price up and I had to pay the new price.

Between ordering and delivery of my car the price went up. My garage told me that they would still charge me the old price as that was what I had agreed to... something about a price promise !

I therefore got the new spec at the old spec price. I say don't give in!

Depending upon the conditions, they can pass any increase on to you - although you do have the option of cancelling the order with no penalty & full refund of deposit.

michael,

you should have used arnold clark instead

i ordered mine at end of july 2002 (20 week wait) and in between new spec came out. i contacted the dealer as i wanted the new spec and was even prepared to pay the £200 increase to get it. i was told that the car would be new spec due to build time and i wouldn't have to pay the difference as i had already placed the order.

as for the mesh grille ... when i placed my order the price had just gone up from £149 to £179. i said i would pay £149 or i wouldn't place the order - naturally they gave in

it's just your luck sometimes with dealers.

belmont weren't keen to give me a trade-in price at all due to the 20wk wait - who is going to order a car without an agreement on a trade-in.

arnold clark offered the best trade-in out of all dealers by £250 and did offer low finance rates but i didn't need to use finance although it was good of them to offer. they also didn't pass on any price increases

being honest i only went to belmont as a last resort as trade-in prices were so low due to lack of discounts - due to previous experience everyone at belmont are a bunch of useless w@@@@@@ and they don't mind proving themselves over and over again

I think they can charge you what they want, under the 1979 sales of goods act. The advertised price is an invitation to treat and not necessarily the price the car will be sold for. I'm not sure they can sting you if you change your mind though, I will get my books out if you need any futher help

yeah sara its an invitation to treat........but i think once u sign a legally binding contract and place a deposit.......thats sorta legally binding unless there is a claus inthe contract stating they can change the price and u cant do anything.....

sorry to get all lawyerish on ya........it totaly depends on the contract so read the small print

if that fails just act all a***y towards them and make it clear u wont reccomend them to anyone and stuff like that and if they are decent they'll let u pay the original price

GOOD LUCK!!!

It's an invitation to treat until you make them an offer and they accept.

As soon as you say "I'll give you £14,000" and they say "Ok" it becomes an offer and they can only change the terms with your consent. Of course, if the contract says that they can up the price if it changes, and you signed it, you have given your consent.

best to read the small print on the contract you signed. the price stated should be the price you pay but if the small print states that this could change then legally they are able to do so.

in terms of customer service it wouldn't be good business practice to do so.

as i said in an earlier post i would have been happy to pay the £200 extra although i didn't need to as i wanted the new spec benefits - but if the price increased without any increase in spec then there is 0% chance that i would have paid extra but i would certainly have got the car at the originally agreed price - it's not advisable for car dealers to upset me too much
