auto headlights will never be 100% perfect - they are not human, just computerised.
i keep them on at auto all the time. they might come on during the day sometimes when you think they shouldn't be on but they are guaranteed to always be on when it's getting dark.
they might not come on sometimes when it's raining etc.. but it does tell you that in the manual.

Mine seem to be slightly erratic, and i was wondering if any of you guys had the same problems:
1) I started a long journey in the early morning (4:00).. and when the light level came up to normal at about 9:00, the lights were still on.
2) I find that if i'm driving in the shade, and the lights come on, and then go off again, which is cool... but when this happens 2 or 3 times, the lights just stay on, as if the computer has said 'must be dusk, cos I can't make up my mind, so I'll keep the lights on'
3) Then I find that this morning, point 2 DIDN'T happen, and that my lights went on and off about 7 or 8 times on the way to work!!!
Apart from the above, is there any way to turn off the lights when they come on?? I resort to switching them to sidelights!

we've had one occation when they wouldn't switch off until the ignition was turned off. Never happened again. Perhaps they are not 100% but is still fun explaining to the bright spark in the multi storey who tells you you've left your lights on that they are automatic and will switch themselves off.
Perhap your problems Craig are just querks of the system have you tried a little simulation by covering the sensor. See if it happens again
