see the e-mail i sent you with the registration plate lookup system I made.
That will tell you when and where a car was or will be registered for the next 50 years.
If anyone is really bothered I can do it for the next 100 years but we will all be to old to drive by then so who cares eh!!

rachel,
the 5 (in 51) in the reg denotes the 2nd half year reg e.g. september. a 0 (as in 02) denotes the 1st half year reg e.g. march.
52 comes out sept 02, 03 in march 03. all 01 plates have been withheld and will be offered for sale at a later date.

That was a bit longwinded wasn't it?
Basically, March numberplates use the last 2 digits of the year. September plates are March + 50.
This system will be valid until 2049 at which point they'll have to change it again.
Dead easy

Yeah, but yours only goes up to this time next year. Mine's fine until 2049
And I sincerely hope that anyone capable of getting on the Internet is able to work out 50+2

I don't want to steal your thunder as I assume your spreadsheet will also tell you about cars registered in the future as well, but if you go to the following page, you can find out if a plate has been issued & when/where it was issued.
Doesn't work on all numbers though (mine hasn't been issued, apparently  )
http://www.newreg.com/frames/on/issued/

Being from Australia, the UK number plate system has always been a mystery to me. It seems that one of the numbers shows the month of registration, at least for new cars, is this correct ?
Do you have any options when it comes to variations ? For instance, can you pick any word you like for your plates ?
The reason I ask is that here in Oz, at least in Queensland, we have quasi-government firm that supplies at least 7 different types of number plates, up to and including the six letter/number "prestige" plate. For example, you could have "my baby" for a number plate if you paid the AU$2800 (about 900 pounds) Go to http://www.ppq.com.au and have a look at "create a plate". Their business is helped along by the fact the the standard issue Queensland plates are boring 3 number + 3 letter purple on white. New South Wales has a similar system.
Is anything like this available in the UK ?

The new system is a load of crap, you don't even notice the year of reg, as you tend to only look at the first couple of letters (this is whilst driving and not when prurchasing a car)
The old system told you straight away what year the car was

The new system is less than a year old. The old system had been around forever (depending on how old you are). Of course it's going to take some getting used to.
