I would like to get a new system, i was going ot get a new head unit and speakers, but looking about on here it seems that amps seem to be order of the day. I dont want it to REALLY REALLY loud just good quality and a bit louder than the existing set up.
Also i dont really fancy a SOny set up but want to keep my stalk....fnar! I was hoping to go down the clarion/kenwood route.
Any thoughts appreciated.

I've always had Kenwood headunits and been really happy with them. OK you lose the stalk adapter & display features, but it's a loss I'm willing to accept for better sound quality.
New speakers are worth getting to replace the existing ones. However, the factory speakers in my 206 hatchback are actually alright for "normal" volumes. As you say, by far the biggest difference in sound (apoart from the headunit) will be getting a powered sub fitted. The CC is a bit awkward due to the lack of space wioth the roof down so you may want to go for a custom built enclosure, or ask around here to see what people recommend.

It will improve the quality especially in the high-mid and top range and will also increase the volume with a better headunit (the factory fitted Clarion isn't particularly powerful).
However, the door enclosure areas for the speakers in the CC are pretty poor and you will see very little gain in quality or volume of the low-mid and bass frequencies - a sub is the only way forward here.

best bet is to change the headunit (there all pritty equal) and change the speakers in there origonal places if you want to (i would recomed it) install a small amp (4 x 50 watt) to power the new speakers and you should havwe a rather nice sounding system try to spend as much as you can afford as you will get what you pay for
