Yes, I can't stop you from asking - doesn't mean I have to answer!Capncol wrote:Can we ask what you paid for it?
Oh alright then - It was less than £1500. I'm satisfied with deal being as I've got just about everything I need to get it going, the bodywork is almost flawless, and it has less than 19k on it.

Re: Newbie from Notts on the hunt for a CC
It's a lot easier to get positive about doing stuff to it when you can see that it shows enough potential to all be worth it in the end. In other words, a good clean may not help mechanically, but it certainly spurs you on to get the jobs done! And what a lot of jobs there are. I've now got my list of Priority Jobs, To Do List of lower priority stuff, Shopping List, and Completed Jobs. Anything with a "*" against it is either a legal requirement, or simply essential to the running of the car. Here goes:Thar wrote:It looks million times better now it's clean, just hope your can get it up and running again

Yer Mad !!! :Constructive comments/tips/personal experience on any of the above always welcome.
If you get stuck with anything, I'm sure someone here will be able to help, or at least steer you in the right direction.
Before you get too involved, take a moment to familiarise yourself with some of the procedures, such as battery disconnect / reconnect & BSI functions. You don't want to fry any new parts!
(As already asked. Start a thread in the "206CC General" section and keep us all updated with your progress)

Er, could a helpful, friendly, talented and good looking moderator move this thread to the relevant section pretty please, and possibly rename it "Toasted 206 return to former glory" at the same time?
Thank you.

Re: Toasted 206 return to former glory
That's fantastic - thank you very much.
Bit of further news - yesterday I posted a letter to the lady who still appears as the current registered keeper on the log form, and also the one previous owner to see if they still have any of the old service history (or even a spare key lying about).
Just before lunchtime today I got a call from the most recent owner - she thought the car had been scrapped after it burst into flames outside her house. She was dead happy to hear of it's progress, and get this: she had a personalised plate on it when she owned it, and still has the original number plates! She said she'd pop them in the post to me "as a present for the car" if I'll just send her some pictures of it when it's finished!
See? Nice people have nice cars!

Take care with the jetwash in the engine bay. Make sure the electrics are well protected or you could be adding a whole extra list of problems to the one you have ... high-pressure water and modern electronics do not go together.
I'd also try a proper engine cleaner like Meguairs rather than WD40 which is really a lubricant. Megs is probably bio-degradable which WD40 won't be ... so better for your driveway!

Re: Toasted 206 return to former glory
Yes, it is indeed a good point about the high pressure water in the engine bay, thanks – particularly with Peugeot wiring, which I’ve had bad experiences with in the past! Not to mention that the damage to this vehicle was all caused by an electrical problem in the first place. However on this occasion my rationale was that all of the main wiring harness and the engine wiring loom would be coming out anyway, and I needed something to kill the nasties that potentially got produced by the fire. A very competent mechanic friend of mine said that he had been speaking to a fireman after a car fire on his road, and he had warned that some particularly evil chemicals (including of all things - CYANIDE!!!) get produced when a car goes up in smoke. No jacket required – more like an NBC suit!
Anyway, HUGE progress to report, including a few pics:
The new number plates arrived, as did the ones from the previous owner. The new ones are now fitted and in the first pic you can see the other engine perched on my towing dolly in the background.
My Haynes arrived too, although I’m more than a bit miffed that the flippin’ thing doesn’t cover the 1.6 litre 16V engines. Also, there were so many minor variations of stuff through the production lifespan that some little things (like how to get the steering wheel airbag off - which took me ages to figure out) can really trip you up when the manual only covers the earlier variants. At least most was the same though, so in the second pic you can see the facia removed.
Once the heater matrix was out of the way the majority of the loom was easily unclipped from the trunking that usually secures it to the bulkhead. A big relief was that there is a secondary main loom which covers all of the SRS system and most of the rear and under-carpet electrics. So the carpets and front seats were able to stay in, and on the RHS there was just an earth to unbolt. The LHS was a bit trickier as wiring ran the full length of the sill, under the rear seats and to the rear ABS connectors and fuel tank sender. Still, could have been much worse.
Then the damaged wiring loom all came out, and pic 3 shows where it suffered the most. Note in particular the molten lumps of insulation that would normally live near the wiper motor (by the most blackened part of the soundproofing), and the charred spider’s web of wires just below the alarm sounder where the fusebox should be found.
The car was now almost empty, prompting Lisa to remark that it looked more like a speedboat than a car inside! Pic 4 shows this quite well, and will be a view that not many on here will be familiar with. From here on it should mostly be all about re-assembly rather than stripping (I hope)!
