Re: Starter motor wiring
No. Just put it in 5th and it should easily turn the engine with a moderate push. Bump start may do more damage to a damaged engine.
Up to you if you want to risk a bump start, especially if you would be changing engine and not repairing old one if it turns out engine is seized.

Re: Starter motor wiring
Thanks I got in contact with the guy i bought it off and this is what he said
"I just turned it off at the key as I saw smoke coming from the starter area. Check if you can hear the solonoid clicking, after that chack the current is getting everywhere it should, it could be the drawing of the current that damaged the starter could have dmaged some of the loom"
So car was running 3-4 weeks ago - bloody electrics aaagh

Have you checked if it's seized? A starter shouldn't smoke when key is turned off. Are you sure he's not telling porkies? Wouldn't be the first time someone has sold something without telling the whole truth. On the large starter connector, check you have continuity to + of battery. Sounds like a bad contact somewhere

Re: Starter motor wiring
Hi
Checked both black leads to the starter with a tester and both bleeping so can assume there is power there
Tried with the car in fifth but I am not strong enough to push the car by myself
Totally lost now......

Re: Starter motor wiring
If you can move it in neutral, you should be able to move it in 5th (with the handbrake off)

Re: Starter motor wiring
I unbolted the starter but left it connected to the power and tried starting it but it isnt turning.
When i took the starter off completely and hooked it upto a spate battery with some jump leads it worked then?
I have ordered a new starter motor and will fit that and see what happens

Re: Starter motor wiring
James have you checked engine yet? You said you had already fitted a new starter, and now you've ordered another one? Even when you've had it working on jump leads??
Cheers Col.

Re: Starter motor wiring
Sounds to me like you have either a bad connection ( + or - ), or the engine is seized. I wouldn't keep ordering new parts without being sure first
Cheers Col.

Re: Starter motor wiring
You dont need to fit the starter if you want to see if the engine is seized
