Do these cars have a vehicle speed sensor module like the old style (2 pin) speed sensors used to have? I think this may be the cause of my non working speedo.

Im not talking about the speed sensor that goes into the gearbox (3 pin) im talking about the module that receives the vss's input, if it has one or not? or does the speed sensor output go straight to the speedo?

Have disconnected the speedo sender and cleared the codes and only had one remaining code which was for the power steering stop information, all good so far.

Today went out in the sunny err 1/2 hour with the top down and it started to rain and hailstone so stopped held down the roof switch windows dropped and car decides its annoying beepy time again.

Thank god I had the allan key with me, let me tell you putting the roof up manually in siling rain isnt much fun on your own.

Now when i got back in the car I noticed the interior light was flashing with the door open, so that can only mean one thing, the sender is still unplugged so its definitely got some sort of bloody wiring fault

Not only that ive discovered that some nice chap has doctored the speedo by removing the airbag light and i've broken a needle disecting the clocks to remedy it so another scrapyard visit for me tomorrow.

New speedo clocks installed still no speedo but all bulbs or leds are present and working on this one.

How do you remove the engine ecu? Or unclip its wiring at least cant see any other way to start stripping the wiring off it to start checking it all.

Struggled to remove the ecu today, had to take off the front grill and offside headlight to work out how to remove it first, plugs were spotless but gave em a squirt of wd40 all the same.

Putting it all back together noticed the horn sat at the bottom of the gap and the wires had completely corroded off it, now sorted i've got a working horn again but the earth wire for it is black inside and i cut off quite a lot trying to find shiny copper to no avail so how long thats going to stay working is anyones guess.

Will try and get all the wiring off tomorrow. Still no speedo

Popped out the new speedo just now after draining what was left of the gearbox oil, thought while it was out id strip off its wiring harness from the lump to where it joins the rest, connect up the old one to it and spin it in my drill.

Well the speedo works like this and I had at least 50mph out of my drill

So that confirms the old speed sensor is fine and ive put it back in and bolted it up, car back together
and refilled the gearbox with 1.9l of 75w-80 oil and guess what?

No speedo

So at least I know for definite its wiring now and the bad wiring is very short between this sensor and the ecu so will change it when I can be arsed. This car is starting to wear me down.

Got rear axle to change soon as its well worn out, anyone reccomend one?

And a final update, in the end all the effort was for nothing.

It turned out that the car had no faults at all electrical-wise and it was infact the speedo drive in the gearbox that was shall we say unfit for purpose......old one on the left new one on the right

The car was actually sensing no input from the speed sensor hence the incorrect signal fault on the diagnostic and disabling the cars functions for safety, roof wouldnt work, airbag light on, no speedo etc

Now ive fitted a new drive all the other functions are working flawless

Lives n learns, this car has been a real endurance on my patience but I got there in the end ;)

Thanks chaps not done too bad considering no one offered any solutions to any problems I asked about. :o

In the end it came down to guess work and a lot of time wasted.

I've been on this forum for 9 years now and I've never seen the problem that you've experienced so I'm not surprised that no-one could offer a solution for you. Sometimes it comes down to doing it yourself when breaking new ground. Hopefully your experience will help others in future. Certainly I've learned something.
