cayman green beauty in Rhodes

Driving through Rhodes on Wednesday to pick up the ferry to my favourite Greek paradise island, we followed a cayman green CC. So envious that the owners of CCs who live in hot countries can take full advantage of having the roof down on a presumably regular basis!!

What use would a CC be on Symi, they havn't got any roads there have they?

Next time, jump on the Nissos Kalymnos and go up a few islands further in the Dodecanese to Kalymnos, (we've been 13 times, visit 14 is in September!). We saw three 1.6 CC's when we were there this year for Pascha, (Greek Easter for the uneducated - God, my ears are still hurting from the dynamite!)- One Black, one Platinum and one Aegean Blue.

The down side of having such a decent car there is 15000 people, each with a moped, crammed into a very small area! How the hell do you stop it from getting dinged?

They certainly do have roads on Symi - ok they are not brilliant and there are no barriers preventing sheer drops hundreds of feet down the cliffs, but there is a road right across the island now, and in some places it has even been tarmaced!! I would not dream of taking a cc there for exactly the reasons you mention - those Greek boys and their scooters and the state of the roads would trash it in no time!! Thanks for the info about Kalymnos - I might head up that way on my next trip (66 days and counting!!) - if I didn't spend so much time and money gallivanting round the Greek Isles I might be able to have afforded the CC before now!!

I've just thought of a connection between our islands .........the sponge!

You might find for sale on Symi a book called The Bitter Sea telling the story of sponge fishing in Greece. It's written by a Brit, Faith Warn, who lives on Kalymnos.

The 1st chapter and last paragraphs of the final chapter had me in tears! It tells of her 1st arrival on the island and of her home above Massouri/Myrties. Apart from the fact she arrived on a hydrofoil, her words describe exactly how we felt when we arrived the 1st time.

Seriously, if you are thinking of going, the airport will be finished next year! This is a bit like 'tomorrow' ... it never comes! If you arrive by boat it will be in the main town, Pothia. Travel a few kms through the island past Chora, Elies, Panormos and Kantouni and you will arrive at what is known as ooh-aah bend.

The name says it all - You are several 100 feet up and the view is amazing, looking over Myrties and Massouri and across the sea to the island of Telendos just 1km away, with the mountains of Kalymnos above you and sweeping around eventually merging into the island of Leros in the distance. Oh, to arrive at ooh-aah bend in the CC with the wind in our hair!

Alas, we are 96 days and counting!
