Hello Anna,
Welcome to the forum.
I would suspect your stop-light switch. Either it's faulty or it needs adjustment.
I take it your car is right-hand drive? If so, the switch is located to the left-hand end of the pedal crossover linkage. How good at DIY are you?
Reach up behind the facia and disconnect the wiring connector then pull the switch out from the pedal bracket. Use a multimeter (or similar) to test the continuity of the switch in both positions. I suspect you may need a brand new switch.
To refit and adjust the switch, hold the brake pedal down and press the switch into the mounting bracket (on r/h drive cars you'll need the help of an assistant).
Slowly release the brake pedal and pull it back to its stop; the pedal will automatically adjust the position of the switch in the mounting bracket.
Reconnect the wiring connector, and check the operation of the stop-lights.
Good luck, and let us know how you get on.
Ron
