206 Heater problems

Post by RussB »

Hi, (New here)
I have a 2000, 206.
Most things have been very good on the car apart from the occasional over, revving from time to time.
Yesterday the heater decided to pack up whilst the wife was out last night.
I checked the fuses first thing, No Problems.
Looked up on the net for clues, located the heater blower resister and removed it. (Luckily mine is a L/H/D (Portugal) so that was easy to extract)
Took a chance on a second hand one from the local breakers, fitted it is seconds, turned ignition on, perfect, blower working fine. :D
Turned ignition off, put resister in its place, started the car, "no blower" :(
Turned engine off, tried the blower "no joy"
Put original resister back in, Blower worked, started engine Blower stopped.
Turned engine off, tried blower "no joy.
Fitted secondhand resister, blower worked on ignition, then stopped when I started the engine.

So, I know there is power from the switch, and to the blower (that works fine) but as soon as the engine is fired up I loose the blower.
Does anyone have any pointers please

I think the problem is one of the switches worked by the ignition key. When switched to ON, it works, applying power to the fan. When turned further to START, it deliberately cuts off power to the fan, to give the starter maximum power. When released back to ON, it no longer conducts, which it should do.

You need a new ignition switch, i expect.

Hi IanL
Many thanks for that, seems a logical explanation,
Will Park on a hill and bump start the car with the ignition on and fan running, thereby not draining the power for starter motor, and see if the fan still keeps running.
I will update tomorrow.

Thanks

Russ,

Just to clarify, it is that the switch only works when moved from ACC to ON. When it moves from START to ON, it fails to make contact, probably due to wear in the mechanism.

Thanks Ian,
The wiring diagram gives this thick of better understanding of the set up.
Did the bump start test this morning, as soon as the engine started on the bump, the blower cut out.
I turned the blower switch to "off" and drove the short distance back home. Before I turned the engine off, I tried the blower again and it worked with the engine running.
I would try the ignition switch as it looks like the right direction, but am I right in thinking The BSI is matched to the ignition barrel, change the barrel you have to change the BSI and all the door locks. That's a headache I could do without,
Can you or anyone advise if it's OK to just swap the barrel?
Many thanks for the help.

As your car is a 2000, it pre-dates the multiplexed electrical system, so I don't know about the anti-theft aspects but I think I know a man who does, on http://www.peugeotforums.com/forums/ and sells parts, keys, etc. If you post your question there, you should get a good answer (Post the last 8 digits of your VIN, to eliminate uncertainty - there are many variations).

My guess is that you could just swap the barrel and the key blade, provided your key is the removable blade type.

Hi Ian.
Many thanks again for your help, thanks to you the problems appears to be resolved.
I have changed the key, the old one was well worn, so far everything is working as it should.
If it happens again I will go down the new ignition barrel route.
Once again thankyou for your knowledge
