My friend's 16V 1600cc 206cc has a gear selection problem. It sometimes works, but usually when I try to select 1st, 2nd or 4th it appears to go in but there is no drive. 3rd, 5th and reverse are OK.
The upper of the two short gear linkages is a little sloppy but not much. I have tried a cable tie on it to see if that fixes it. Not as a permanent solution ☺ but as a test. It doesn't help.
There are two levers on the gearbox, the upper one is worked by the long rod. Apart from rotating, the shaft this is on also slides up and down, is this right?
I would think that the most likely problem is the sloppy linkage, but I'm not sure and would like to be before buying and fitting parts. Could it be the selection mechanism inside the gearbox?

Re: Gear Selection Difficulty
Sounds like a gearbox fault. There are 3 selector rails.
1/2
3/4
5/R
It may be something as simple as a broken roll pin.

Re: Gear Selection Difficulty
After further experimentation, I find that I can only get 5th and reverse. The linkage seems to be OK, a bit of slop but less than 3mm. Using the gear lever or moving the linkages, 2nd, 3rd and 4th appear to engage but there is no drive, 1st doesn't appear to engage anything. I assume the vertical movement of the top lever is normal. I am beginning to think this problem is with selectors inside the gearbox.
