I've been to the Maldives Pete (a fact that will not surprise some forum members
)
It is truly stunning. I stayed on a resort island called Bandos Island and it was first class. The experience of landing at Male airport, walking thru the air terminal and getting into a speedboat instead of a taxi must be fairly unique.
If watersports (not that kind you kinky bugger!) strolling thru the sand, watching the sunrise/set and enjoying terriffic food and alcohol outdoors is your bag then its perfect.
Unfortunately I went thru work so a lot of the experience can only be imagined as I was with 15 other Aircrew and technicians. But I always said that with a woman it would be one of the most romantic places in the world.
So theres my Maldives report (not in the usual style
)
In summary: Its very nice
Can get a little boring
You need to be with a woman (ideally one that will put out!!)
The banknotes are beautiful (even the ones that are worth
1/2p)
hope that helps...
alternatively a weekend in Skeggy is an option

I'm off there at xmas pete - Giravaru (apparently it was where maldivians first came from). Agree with CB about the lack of stuff to do (apparently you can walk round the island we're going to in less than ten minutes) but then again if sitting by the beach/bar floats ya boat then you'll be well away.
If you change ya mind about going then I can always go on your holiday and you can stay at my house for a couple of weeks
Lovely seaside views from my house but no flight - sorted!

I stayed on an Island called Reethi Rah. It is described as being a more rustic cheaper Maldives Island. But turned out to be uncommercialised and unspoilt unlike some of the islands I have been told about.
Nothing could prepare us for such beauty. It was like nothing else on earth. It is the sort of place that gives you a totally different perspective on life. I will never be the same since going there. Just be prepared for the mega depression when you leave. I would happily do away with my CC and materialistic items and live the rest of my life on an island like that. That said it might not suit all people. If you like shopping, clubbing and showing off. Then sorry this is not the place for you. You need to like the company of the person your there with, but I guess this will not be a problem if you are prepared to marry them.
Just take some snorkel equipment and ask the locals for directions to the best part of the reef. Oh and take some form of eardrops. I had an ear infection when I was out there, but it still didn’t put me off. When you get to Male airport just relax you may think it is totally unorganised, but those Maldiveans seem to know exactly what is going on. Just let them guide you to a seat and just wait for them to collect you. Also I found on our island that they preferred to be tipped with cigarettes for some reason so it might be an idea to get some. Think of those bounty adverts and that film Blue lagoon!!! That’s just what its like

Oh yeah. They do have their own currency, but we took American dollars and this seemed acceptable. On our island we didn’t keep any money with us as you just tell the waiters etc. what bungalow number you are staying in and then settle up at the reception at the end of the holiday. It is all very informal. The reception was actually out in the open and made of palm leaves and coral.
You will want to try and go half board as a minimum as the food is very expensive. As are the drinks. Being a bit of a tight arse. We actually took loads of bottled water in our bags. Not a bad idea as you will not need much in the way of clothing plus water works out at about £2.50 a bottle over there and you will be drinking lots of it in that heat. Clothing wise I was told that females should cover up whilst in Male as it is an Islamic culture. However there were women over there that had beach wear on and no one seemed to mind. Also don’t bother eating any pork or beef as it just doesn’t taste right over there. However the Fish and curries are something else. I am not a lover of fish but they seem to be able to make fish taste like all forms of meat.
Most of the island resorts have websites and email address's. So have a look on the web.
