Hiya everyone

First time on here hoping someone can help me before I very quickly go off my pug 206cc 1.6 2001:(. I only got this car last week from a dealer it as 88000 on clock full service history, service light came on yesterday so it going to be serviced on thursday.

Now the very wierd problem- came to start the car this morning and it wouldnt start, it as always started first time from getting it, so I jumped it then it drove perfect, left it parked up at work for about 9 hours when I came back to it the car started fine and NO warning lights. Get home turn the lights off then the engine take the key out and I have got the battery warning light on which goes off as soon has I start the engine. So I turn the engine on put the lights on, turn the engine off then the lights off and I have NO warning lights. I thought that is so wierd so once again I turn the engine on the lights on still have NO battery warning light, so turn the lights off then the engine off and guess what the stupid battery warning light is on and doesnt go off till I turn the engine on.

Please can someone help I think this car is going daft and havent got a clue whats a matter with it, I turned the engine off then the lights so I have no battery warning light on now, but will the car start in the morning or is they a fault with the battery.

I thought if they was a fault with the battery the warning light would be on when the engine is on but oh no it's only on when the engine is off and then that depends if I turn the lights or engine off first.

Hope you can understand what I mean- and with abit off luck tell me why is the car going daft.

Thank you everyone

The service light comes on whenever you switch the ignition on and indicates how many miles until the next service is due. I guess that what you are saying the spanner is staying lit even when the total distance recorder resumes normal operation (ie. after 5 seconds). With the age and mileage of your car you need to check whether the timing belt has been changed. It should have been changed at 80,000 miles. If it breaks you'll have a very expensive bill.

If a dealer has just sold the car then I would have expected them to give it a service if one was due. Rather naughty of them if they didn't.

As to the battery warning light this can be:
faulty operation of the charging circuit,
loose battery or starter terminals,
a slack alternator belt,
an alternator fault.

If the car is on its original battery it could be time for a new one. Get them to check it out when you have it serviced.

It could be that the car has been sold by the previous owner because it was going to start costing money. I hope not for your sake.

Welcome to the forum by the way Kirstie.

Thanks for letting me know about the timing belt!!!! When I take it to be serviced thursday will they be able to tell me when and if it as been changed??????
I dont know if it is the original battery because the only paper work really with the car is old M.O.T's and the service book.
The dealer was very naughty and didnt do the service, which i never thought to ask them to do.
Today my car as ran perfect like it should, but when then ignition is turned off the battery warning light is on, but i did notice that the lights on the window switch's and hood lights are on and dont go off, dont they should be but what do i know about cars.

Hi Kirstie,
If, as you say, the car has full service history, AND has been serviced within the approved Peugeot service network, then I would think that the dealership will have its service record on computer. If the timing belt has been changed then that ought to be noted in your service book.
It doesn't sound as if you've purchased the car from an official Peugeot dealership. If this is the case I would be very wary about letting them do any work on the car. Better to use a Peugeot specialist, either official or independent.
If you did buy the car through the Peugeot network I would ask them why they didn't service the car if it was due.
Good luck.
