Hi
I am looking to purchase a peugeot 206. I've always fancied one and im downgrading from a 2.0 mitsubishi FTO for financial reasons.
I was considering getting a 1.4 as it is chepaer on petrol, but now i'm thinking it might be a little slow for me and im thinking of a 1.9 diesel.
i mainly do short journeys, maybe 10 miles a day only sometimes.
I'm finding that there arent as many cars out there in my price range at moment, possibly due to the scrappage scheme? my budget is £1600.
All advice appreciated.
Thanks

If you do only low mileage I'd stick to a petrol hatchback. Loads of them about. The 1.4 is fine but if you're lucky you'll find the odd 1.6 about which is perkier and virtually as economical. I searched on Autotrader and found nearly 40 cars priced at £1000 or less. Leave yourself something in your budget for repairs as there is almost guaranteed to be something necessary. As soon as you get it give it a good service.
With your budget pick one with a long MOT and give it a long test drive to find any obvious faults. Make sure everything works and that it drives smoothly. I'd avoid automatics. Check the oil, water, screenwash, tyres and interior etc. You'll get a feel as to whether it has been looked after. I wouldn't buy a neglected one. Try to find one on a private sale that has been cherished by its (elderly?) owner.
Good luck.
