Hiya,

Ive wanted a 206cc since before i could drive and thursday i am finally getting one! I have been reading loads and know there seems to be many probs...

car look in great condition but i havent seen it yet in person, am i making the right choice?

should i go with my heart and say yes or go with my head and say yes lol

its an 01 plate moonstone blue, 90k miles, £2400 ....am i getting a bargain or being conned???

Hi tasha86 and welcome to the forum!

Just done a rough valuation which is coming up with a px value of between £2,100 and £2,400 depending on condition so the price doesn't seem too bad.

Try and give the car a decent test drive and make sure you test the roof before you buy. Try not to not make the decision before you have seen it...although I know it's hard! Let us know what you decide to do!

Welcome to the forum Tash. If you do go ahead with the purchase then my advice would be to leave plenty in your budget for repairs.
The main issue with a car of that age and mileage is: has the timing belt been changed? If not, it is due now and will cost several hundred pounds to have it done. Check this out before you buy it. If the belt breaks the engine will be wrecked and the car will then be worth nothing. If there is no service history play safe and assume it hasn't been done. Get the price reduced by £600 to allow for the cost of getting it done.
Let your head rule your heart with a car of this age, there are plenty about. Best time to buy one is in winter. Prices are highest in the summer.
Read the owners manual thoroughly so that you know how to operate the car, particularly the roof, and as Thar says, make sure everything works properly BEFORE you commit to buy.

If possible, try to get a car with as low mileage as possible - I got mine with 46,000 kilometres on it which is something like.... 30,000 miles? Anyway, it will last you longer if it hasn't travelled as far

Also, the newer the better - sounds obvious but with age comes engine wear, aged/shrunken/cracked roof seals = leaks, and also depending on how much it was used, the roof mechanism may soon be on it's way out and thats a hugely expensive replacement. Personally, I wouldn't buy one of these that is as old as that with that many kilometres (or miles) on it as the chance of problems increases and I don't think the trouble would be worth it but if it has been very well looked after it should be ok.

Although I am not mechanically minded, I heard no faults on the test drive, nothing out of the ordinary, I have since spent just under £1'000 all on wear and tear like exhaust, suspension arms, brakes etc (Engine sound).

Also check insurance, my 2.0 2001 206cc with 4 years no claims and £300 excess my insurance was £550 with swift cover paid in one annual payment where as my fiat punto previous was £198 annually, big difference

The belt had been changed at 79000 miles he said it is in great condition, my budget originally was about 2500 for a car and i wanted a convertible so didnt really want to spend to much on it, my partner knows a mechanic so he can always help but i knew if i had spent 8k or something on the car and it went wrong all the time then i would be annoyed but at this price i think i am expecting things to have to be fixed, it has full service history and the bodywork doesnt have any scratches or dents or anything,

he says the roof works fine it is taxed for 6 months and mot until feb so its not too bad, what do i need to check when i get there? ive noticed something about the seat i find a bit worrying but i have to drive it 85 miles to get home so want to be careful!

my insurance is going to be about £42 a month which is double what i am paying now but then that is on a 1.1 106 lol i think i may pay an annual payment if i can

I would wait until the winter but at the moment i am sharing a car and we work different shifts it is just not working out so i need it now really....

is there anyway to test the roof if it is on its way out?

It sounds OK from what you have said.

I don't know how you would tell if the roof was "on it's way out", maybe someone else could advise, but I would certainly ask for it to be lowered and raised while you are there.

What is the problem with the seat you are worried about?

I suspect the seat may not be locking into position on its runners? So the seat will just slide forward and back freely? A fairly common problem and if so, you'll need to budget a couple of hundred at least for a dealer to fix it. Unless your friends are good engineers.

yes that is what i meant! the only thing that hasnt been done is the clutch so im preparing for that to go soon hopefully not on the way home!!!!!

I bought my chrome hoops from Ebay for around £40. They aren't original Peugeot but you can expect to pay around £200 for those. I think mine look fine for the money. There are several on Ebay at the moment, all non-original as far as I can see and the prices vary quite a bit. These seem about the cheapest Buy It Now in the UK at the moment http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/PEUGEOT-206-CC-ro ... 3caec08962 as an example. They're really easy to fit by the way.

To get an idea of the condition of the roof, the one way i can think of is to watch it in operation. It should move all at a constant speed, without any 'twitches'.

As for chrome rollover bars, I got mine from Ebay too - they're Toyosports and they set me back 36 pounds (plus another 50 for postage grrrrrr) but you wouldn't have that problem
