Hello any advice would be appreciated. I discovered while removing my rear brake hub that the nut had been cross threaded . The previous owner has cut a slice out of the shaft and bashed the rim of the nut into the groove to create a lock nut. I would like to replace the shaft and nut but am unsure about how to remove the shaft. The car is a 99 1.1 four door.

I doubt very much that the nut had been cross threaded. If it had been it wouldn't have gone on more than one turn.
If the nut is removed one should always use a new hub nut on re-assembly. It is then tightened to the specified torque. The nut is then secured in that position by staking it firmly into the groove on the stub axle. It is designed that way.
If you didn't know that, may I suggest that you purchase a suitable workshop manual and learn from it, or leave working on your car to those with the knowledge and capability of doing it properly. There are safety issues here. If a wheel comes off after you've been working on your car you could kill someone.

It is possible to force a nut on if you are an idiot as the previous owner of my car seemingly is.I would also like to say thank you for all the stating the obvious while not addressing the problem. Unfortunately you seem to keep your knowledge like a miser his money. I posted on another forum and was informed of my error in a pleasant manner . I thanked this individual and he said he was glad to help, I feel we both benefited from the exchange.I regret implying that the previous owner of my car was an idiot as I believe lack of knowledge does not make an idiot . If we do not ask how do we learn?.Ridculing people who wish to learn is an unfortunate trait.

Im afraid I did add impatient and sarcastic on another thread you were involved with. My main concern though is that when you reach the end of your life and look back you will have regrets.You might wish you had been a better person but it will be too late.
