Loss of Power steering when stalling whilst in motion?

Post by oraCle »

Hi,
I've had my 206CC for just over 5 years. I have a question and hope someone can enlighten me. A couple of years ago, a cold morning leaving home and going around a corner, I discovered :yikes: that if my engine stalled, I lost the power steering and was left to struggle to get the car around the corner rather than hit and climb on the pavement. This was reminded to me again yesterday morning, again a cold start, when slightly further away from my house and in a busier area with more traffic, but yet again taking a corner, the engine stalled and again I was left straining to make the turn whilst still in motion.
Is this a normal and 'exciting feature' of Peugeots / 206/ CC that owners have to be aware of, or is there something wrong with my car in particular? Basically I'm asking if loosing the power stearing when the car stalls is 'normal' or is there a problem I can have fixed? Has anybody else experienced this?

Many thanks. Carole

Hi Carole

That will happen on any car that has power steering. The power steering is powered by the engine/only usable when the engine is switched on.
So its normal for your power steering to cut out when the engine stalls.

Thanks Jackie.
I guess it was a shock both times it happened because It's never seemed so heavy on any of my previous cars though and I've had old cars that didn't have power steering. This one is near impossible to manoeuvre once stalled. Luckily it's only happened twice since I've had the car but still caught me unawares and half way through turning both times.
I can't believe car manufacturers think it's OK for this to happen - how dangerous is it!! I mean, if this happened when turning whilst in heavy traffic, it's likely it would cause an accident and on the motorway at higher speed would make it quite interesting to try and steer the car onto the hard shoulder. Hmmm, 'interesting'

Many thanks,

Carole

You need to get the stalling sorted .. it shouldn't do that. It means something isn't quite right and the engine isn't idling at the right speed .. you'll probably need to hook the car to a diagnostic system to find out what's going on. Whatever it is, it obviously isn't turning the engine management light on.

I'd be guessing if I suggested anything ...

I wonder whether there are any hissing noises under the bonnet with the engine running. Could be evidence of a vacuum leak from a split plastic hose? Could cause stalling/hesitation.

Could be other things of course, but those vacuum hoses tend to get brittle with age.
