when i used to get loans to part finance my car, i normally used peugeot finance. as i never kept the car that long i used to need to settle the loan early. although you still had to pay the interest charges, peugeot finance normally gave a decent discount.
not all dealers use peugeot finance for some reason and that is when the discount becomes close to zero.

A word of advice about Peugeot Finance Passport Scheme.....in my opinion DON'T DO IT! I almost made the mistake of not shopping around for finance but I'm glad I did in the end. I ended up taking finance with the Alliance and Leicester online as the final payment was.....wait for it......over £2000 less than it was with Peugeot for borrowing the same amount. My dealer has made no comment!

Fee, I think you will find if you looked closer, that the passport scheme final payment was guaranteed. Meaning if the vehicle was not worth the final figure then you could have handed the keys back and walked away. Sounds like you put an extra £2000 on finance for no reason? Do be careful on manufacturer schemes, rates can be higher but they do give you the hand-it-back option that others don't which is good in an uncertain market.

Be aware also that dealers have more than one finance package that they can offer you - i recently introduced a colleague to my mate at the dealership, and he put her on the 'other' finance package which involves a £500 saving on interest charges - and she didnt even borrow very much! This plus 4% discount plus loads of freebies - she nearly got as good a deal as i normally get!

dealers have different packages as you say - they are merely just different interest rates.
when i was buying my CC during the time of 20 weeks waiting list and low discounts, to try and get me to buy, the sales guy offered me a very low rate which was about 6% i think. i didn't take it as the rate would needed to have been lower than what i earned from the bank for the money to be worthwhile but it shows that they do use different rates.
rates normally vary depending on age of car, e.g. new cars are lower rates and also on deposit paid but they can probably ignore these factors if it beens they sell the car giving the lower rate.
