Hi all,
This morning on the way to work I was stuck in heavy traffic for about 30 mins. I noticed after that the temperature gauge was quite high, but carried on thinking it would be ok now that the traffic had cleared and I was moving again.
However, the temperature rose and the STOP light began to flash. I realised that it had been a long time since i checked the coolant in the car. I pulled over and walked to the nearest garage and bought some coolant, and topped up the coolant level. Then drove the car, the temperature gauge again went higher than normal, so I pulled in at the garage and topped the coolant up with water. 30 minutes later I drove the remainder of my journey into work (about 4 miles). The temperature gauge now stayed under 90, and the car seemed fine.
I'm worried about my journey home tonight though, by topping up the coolant will that have rectified the problem?

Re: STOP warning light/coolant
Moral of the story is to check all your levels regularly.
How much did you put in?
Keep a close eye on the coolant as you may have a leak. If you allow the level to fall too low and over heat engine, you can cause a head gasket failure.
I suggest you drive home with a can of water with you in case you need to top up, and check level before you set off
