Did you notice the temp?
What colour was the smoke? Did it smell?

Have you checked coolant level? You may have had enough of an overheat to split the air pipes on the engine. Check carefully for splits between the air filter box up to the throttle body on the engine (where the last bit of plastic pipe ends)

Over filling it won't do it any good. It will blow oil seals and ruin the catalytic converter.

Have you checked the oil level then?

It should be full up to the maximum mark and no more (have the car on level ground and leave the car for 5 minutes after the engine has been stopped before checking). If the level exceeds the top mark then you'll need to let some out through the sump drain plug. Wear plastic gloves and be careful. You may be better to drain it into a clean container and re-fill it as you might find it difficult to just let some out before re-inserting the drain plug fully.

Who the heck serviced it if it has been overfilled? They need telling.

To the max mark, or right to the top past the full mark? (as per grandadmonkey)
Did you check for splits?

That wouldn't explain the erratic revs but splits in the inlet will.

Who serviced it? When they serviced it did they put new spark plugs in it? If so did they use Bosch spark plugs? If you don't use the correct specification Bosch plugs Peugeot cars tend not to run well.

Was it serviced by a Peugeot specialist or not?

Did it have any poor running symptoms before it was serviced?

Please answer all of the above questions.

Capncol is right about the possibility of split pipes/hoses affecting the running. They have to be moved when changing the plugs and if you are not extremely careful they can split while moving them.
