Hi, bought a 206cc last week, 2002 1.6 petrol manual done 57k, went out to the car to clean it, put key in ignition and Economy Mode Active came up on the screen and car wouldn't start, took battery to work (main dealer) who tested the battery and foubd a dead cell and also completely the wrong battery for the car, bought new battery and fitted it 2 days later and still non start and still Economy Mode Active - any ideas please before I contact the Peugeot dealer round the corner

thanks

Hi Rachel and welcome.
Eco mode will be active after the ignition has been operated for 30mins without the engine being started. It will go once the engine has been started.
Need a little bit more info about the non start. Does the starter operate when you turn the key? Any other warnings? (Imobiliser?)
Cheers Col.

Hi thanks for your reply, yes the starter does operate but just won't fire up, the oil level shows full, the only lights left lit are the battery light and the engine warning light, when we took the off and put the new one on we werent aware of the correct procedure, could this be the problem?

thanks

Possible. Unfortunately with eco mode active, you won't be able to test everything. Items such as Radio, wipers, windows etc: will be deactivated by Eco mode.

Without a code reader to point you in the right direction, it becomes a bit of a guess.
You could try taking the spark plugs out, and with them pushed into the coil pack, you could check for sparks. If you have sparks, you could put about a teaspoon full of petrol down each plug hole, refit everything and see if it fires up for a second or two. This will show if problem is spark or fuel related. If fuel related, check fuel pump is operating.
If you fancy trying this I can give you more details on how to do it.

BTW. Has this car had a cambelt change yet? It should have been done 2 years ago.
Cheers Col.

I really appreciate your help but that is beyond my technical capabilities! I have to collect a touch up stick tomorrow from the Peugeot dealer so will see what they say, the cambelt was replaced last year by a Peugeot dealer, will let you know the outcome, I got three months warranty with the dealer so hopefully it wont cost me anything!

Yes, please keep us posted..
A non starting engine should be covered by your warranty, unless you have done something to cause the problem, which from your posting you haven't.
Cheers Col.

Sounds like one key has the wrong or missing immobiliser chip. or it needs recoding to bsi.

car not starting?
Hi there ,there is the answer,
coms unit, otherwise known as indicator stalk unit.
why? well about 2 weeks ago my wife's car would not start ,i got 2 fault messages on the dash.
Economy mode and Engine immobiliser fault.
I phoned a auto electrician and he came out with his laptop , Peugeot Laptop is the only reader that will tell you what's wrong he said , for the reading £60

The engine immobiliser fault --- well the car would not start , everything worked lights radio wipers windows, the lot, turned over but would not fire .
it was caused by the coms unit/indicator stalk unit, i got a second hand one from a scrapyard fitted it and it started just like that, by the way I had charged the battery as I flattened it trying to start it. second hand from the scrapyard .£60

VERY IMPORTANT !!, forget the numbers you see as the part numbers for the stalk ,it means nothing in this case ,to get the right one for your car, simply undo the 2 screws under the bottom half of the steering cowl, look up at the back for the 2 big square shaped jacks, those are the 2 colours you look for when finding the part, (mine was white and blue.2002 2.0 cc auto lights and auto wiping with trip computer.)
when fitting your new part, disconnect the battery, then carefully release the steering wheel cover via a small access area with a small screwdriver underneath the wheel ,do it wrong and your airbag will go off !!.
the wheel cover comes off and next use a torgue head to free the steering wheel, get someone to hold the wheel from outside the car while you use a power bar and your correct torgue sitting in the seat and you crack the bolt loose where you are sitting straight and can secure the bar correctly, i got someone to fit it for me and I held the wheel. the unit comes of very easy.
you may loose your remote control ability as a result of changing the unit, but this can be recoded no problem to pair the remote key to the car, you can still however lock unlock central doors and start car as normal.

Economy mode, well he said that's because I rand the battery flat.
NOTE: this is how and what I was told to and buy in my case, by the guy that came out and read my faults, the part came a couple days later, fitted it and started right away

I thought I would post this as this is where I came looking when I ran into bother with mine, so to help someone else out I'm doing my bit.
Thanks
