Two Mileometer Buttons

okay silly question (only done 125 mile in CC) why are there two mileometer buttons on the 2.0l SE ? the one on the left doesn't seem to do anything?

is mine broke or does someone know what the hell it's supposed to do!

ps(french manual too)

the button on the left adjusts the brightness of the console lights. Hold down the button and it will cycle up or down until it reaches the limit and then if you press it down again it will cycle back through. I hope I explained it well enough.
