Getting to Comm 2000 unit (removing steering wheel)

Post by Jamesk07 »

Hi guys,

Having a problem with the dreaded "indicators with a mind of their own"... I have bought the nylon insert required to fix the original COM2000 unit in the car and the guide to popping it open and inserting the new sleeve looks simple. Question is, does anyone know if you need to disconnect the battery prior to removing the steering wheel and, in turn, the airbag?

I was thinking this may not be necessary, and a few videos on YouTube show people doing it with full electrics running inside the car. I had intended to disable the airbags with the key and begin to dismantle.

What are your thoughts?

Many thanks,

James

Ask yourself one question (in the words and tone of Dirty Harry): "do ya feel lucky - well do ya, punk?!?"

If you feel like risking firing a screwdriver through your head for the sake of resetting your clock and radio stations, then you're a braver man than I!

The key only disarms passenger airbag. Disconnect the battery using the correct method.

Well, thanks for your help guys. I managed to get the airbag and steering wheel off, following the BSI instructions for battery disconnection and reconnection without injuring myself, which was nice!

Turns out that my car doesn't have the old style unit to control indicators etc. as once I opened it up it looked nothing like any of the guides I've seen. That said, as it was open I removed the sealed unit for the indicator stalk, got it apart and gave it a good clean out. There's a metal pin which makes connection with each of the contacts inside, this looked worn on the side that touches, so I managed to spin that round to the unworn side. Re-assembled and put the car back together... So far so good, indicators and lights all functioning as they should.
