Handbrake/low fluid light staying on?!!

Post by Stevebeese »

Hi , not sure if anyone can shed any light on this for me, the handbrake light stays illuminated on my 2001 206cc, it fades slightly when I let the handbrake off, but still stays lit, I need to get it sorted so I can get the car mot'd! I've tried a new handbrake switch, no change, fluid is up to the mark, I've traced the wires from the switch to the loom and all is fine, so really pulling my hair out with it now!

If a brand new handbrake switch didn't cure it, have you checked the brake reservoir cap? I think it "makes" the circuit with contacts that are operated by a float mechanism. Maybe the contacts or the connector are dirty causing a resistance, and thus effectively an open circuit there.

On our 1.6 the float switch is built into the body of the reservoir itself, not the cap. If the connector is clean and ok, then I suppose the float itself could have lost some buoyancy if there was a weakness in the moulding.

Welcome to the forum, and good luck.

The sensor is actually part of the reservoir on the cc, tried unplugging and bridging the terminals that end though and still made no difference , so I ruled that out, I think it's got to be a short somewhere but I'm struggling to find out where? Seems to be a lot electrical faults on these cars caused by water ingress? Just wondering if that could be the case , but everything else on the car is fine, so seems unlikely
