Engine cooling fan blow or suck?

Post by philip.nh »

Hi. I have a 51 plate 206 1.1 lx. The cooling fan has developed a horrible screeching sound when it first spins up which I have put down to knackered bearings.
Having an early non a/c model 206 my fan looks to be an old design. The fan bolts onto the plastic radiator surround at the motor (rather than the newer ones where the fan cowling bolts onto the plastic). It also sits between the plastic surround and the radiator rather than the newer fan design which can be removed without removing the radiator.

I managed to find a replacement fan on ebay which looked to be the same design and a like for like replacement. However….
The current/old fan blows air into the engine bay, directly onto the radiator. The new fan has the same rotation direction however the pitch of the fan blades are opposite to the original fan so rather than blowing air into the engine bay it blows out the front of the car (sucking air away from the radiator).

So i'm hoping some of you will be able to advise me on my dilemma!
Did peugeot change the polarity of the fan connector in later years? Or did they change the design so that rather than blowing air onto the radiator it sucked air away from it?

Any advice that you can offer is really appreciated! (I tried linking to pics of the current/new parts but it wouldn't me post links…)

Thanks, Phil

You are on the Peugeot 206cc forum which is for 206cc owners. The 206cc has never used the 1.1 engine.

You might be better off asking on the http://www.206info.co.uk/ forum.

Can't help with the rotational direction, but could you put the old fan on new motor? If not. I would send it back.
Cheers Col.

ok thanks, i'll try on the other forum.
Out of interest though, if on the CC the fan is mounted in front of the radiator, does it blow air onto the rad or away from it? If anyone could have a look i'd appreciate it.

Phil,
On the 206cc the fan is mounted in front of the radiator and the normal airflow is supplemented by blowing air from the front onto the radiator. On models like yours without air conditioning a single speed cooling fan is fitted. This is controlled by a thermostatic sensor on petrol engines. Models with air conditioning have a two-speed cooling fan, which is controlled by a "Bitron" control unit on petrol engines. On diesel engines the fan is controlled by the injection system electronic control unit.
So your car's system is rather different from that of the 206cc.

As far as I know though all 206 cars have the fan mounted forward of the radiator and blow air onto the radiator.
