stereo problem

Post by smokey »

Hi I'm looking for some help, I've installed and after market Sony head unit and have changed the wires like everyone has said to keep the memory, but I have a problem that I have to switch it on and off manually, I would like to have this come on when I start the car and go off when I switch the ignition off
Please help

Sounds like you need to swap the wires back.

I've swapped the wires back over and I lose the memory settings, I was wondering if it had to do with the fact there are other wires as the car had a stereo stalk on the steering wheel? If I turn the car off and take the key out after about 2/3 minutes the stereo turns itself off any way?

Well you haven't said much about the car or the head unit so I was guessing.
Cheers Col.

Thats how these cars are unless you re wire it to the ignition.

Stupid idea to have stereo stay on after youve gone in the house anyway

It switches off after 3 mins because the BSI goes to sleep (now that I know the year of the car I know it is Plexed model) You have 2 "live" feeds, One of the feed wires is an ignition switched "live" the other is permanent and this is to retain the memory of your stored stations. You just need to find which ones they are and connect them accordingly (usually red & yellow)

When you get in the car it turns it on as a courtesy feature for 2 minutes, cant think why they would have it playing away for 2 minutes after youve locked it though.

Outside this 2 minutes the head unit wont work if its wired up correctly.

You need to find a healthy (read that as thick) cable that is only live when the accessory position onwards is on otherwise you could damage some wiring and have popping fuses.

Probably best to get someone in the know to do this for you, personally I would leave it as it is.

I have managed to get some photos of the connection blocks for the stereo , having looked at it again the stereo will turn itself off after about a minute, then if you put the key in the ignition and turn it to auxiliary settings hey presto the stereo works? Just in don't want to be leaving the stereo on when I get out of the car.any ideas

The 1st pic looks like the 2 power feeds. Have you tested them with a meter to see which is permanent and which is switched pos?

I agree with Slo. If it's all working OK other than a delayed switch off I would leave it as it is.
Cheers Col.

I've just bought a pug stalk to sony converter for mine and now not only does the stalk control the radio but the radio goes straight off when you remove the key and it also keeps the memories.

I reccomend it
