Spacesaver spare for 206cc

Post by IanL »

I have done a search, but found no answer to this:

Is there a spacesaver spare which is the same diameter as the cc's standard roadwheel and tyre?

The spacesaver used on the fixed-top 206s is about 2" smaller in diameter, and, even at limited speed, it doesn't sound like a bright idea.

As it is only used in emergencies, and never above 50 mph I have never found the space saver spare to be a problem. It also sits out of site belted into the rear seat behind me under the wind deflector.

If I was anticipating requiring a spare to drive a long distance and at normal speeds then I think I'd go for a full size alloy wheel to match the other four on the car. However it would be too big to sit where I keep the space saver.

Some compromise is required.

Having had to use one on my Alfa once (in France) I would suggest putting the space-saver on the rear axle and the full size on the front regardless of which punctures ....

(1) the lower profile means the underside is more likely to scrape :censored:
(2) it can throw your ABS into a spin! :?

Thanks for the responses, especially the warning about which axle to use it on.

I have done a bit of research, and it seems that the 207 (some/all???) use a 125/80 R15 on the same wheel as the 206, so it should be a much better fit.

206 spacesaver diameter 21.3"
207 spacesaver diameter 22.9"
206cc full size diameter 23.3"

£18 plus delivery of £10 to Jersey, but free of VAT so not too bad. Should have it early next week, and I'll post again with the outcome.

Ive got one from a scrapyard, no idea what dimensions it is but it came from a 206 tin top and fits perfectly under the boot blind and ive driven with it on both axles and no problems whatsoever.

Definately recommend getting one but they are pretty scabby from under scrap cars

Funny about that. I've done more research, and it seems with three different cars:
206 tin-top, 207 tin-top and Suzuki Cappuccino, the spacesaver is smaller in diameter than the full size. Maybe I was fussing about nothing, but it certainly is counter-intuitive.

Anyway, I shall be happier with one which is closer to full size diameter, and it will fit the boot, because a full size does (just). Well, it would need to, once you've fitted the spare ;)

The wheel is a lot thinner, and the rim is certainly smaller but thats because it has a 110 size tyre wall whereas the proper wheels have size 45 tyre walls or something similar. So the circumference of the actual wheel tread is same, this is to allow for some comfort over the thinner lighter wheel as a 45 size tyre wall that on a wheel that thin would be quite harsh on the sphincter muscle like a go kart wheel

That was originally what I thought and expected, but the point of my post is that the circumferences are not the same:

Well thats good that you cleared that up but its only meant to be a get you to safety temporary measure at a slow speed not for running around on for a month or so and its been confirmed that it fits on all 4 corners with no rubbing

I agree with the point made by Gazza about using the spacesaver wheel only on the back. I would be very wary about using it on the front where the drive, the steering, and most of the braking forces take place. Basically the rear wheels just roll, and do a lot less work.

I agree with that, but I'm astonished that driving - even restricted to 50mph - on a wheel of 10% less diameter than the other three is considered safe.

I suppose they know what they're doing :hmm:

Spacesaver spare for 206cc

I bought a full size alloy which matches the four on the car and it fits under the boot blind, uses about half the boot space so still plenty of room for shopping etc.
I prefer this to the space saver option.
