You have plugged it back in properly and locked the plug down? They it's you've disturbed the bulb holders, the bulbs have failed or in moving it you may have broken one or more of the pins that join the two circuit boards to one another inside. The latter are soldered on and the joints dry and come away.

it was only the cover we removed (central locking hazard light switch) in order to gain access to the heater fan resistor (this didnt work so replaced cover)

Still think you have dislodged something. Take cover off and press on connection plug and then three bulb holders one-by-one.

Then it looks like a case of studying wiring diagrams and tracing back to where you have a fault. You will need a multi meter

They are the small capless type t5. I think there are three. They just pull out, but I had assumed you had checked the bulbs.

If they are old they will blow very easy and just knocking the display can finish them off

The solder joints inside also get dry and fail easily .. I had a replacement MFD sent via post and well protected in bubble-wrap .. it was working fine in the original car but won't in ours .. the solder let go just in the post!
