Noisy gearbox

I have a noisy gearbox and its doing my head in.

Its a 5 speed (MA I think) fitted to a 1.6 16v engine.

I replaced my 20CN20 gearbox for one from a scrapyard that I was told was good and would fit.

They sent me a 20CP43 which did fit (Seems to rev higher for the same speed than the old one) but its noisier than my old one so now going about getting that sorted.

What causes the noise and how easy is it to sort as I am thinking about possibly fixing my old box whilst its out so I can swap it back in and get a refund for the faulty one the scrapyard sent. Is it one specific bearing than makes all the noise?

Without knowing more about the symptoms can't even guess as it could be any of the bearings. Did you replace the clutch?

BTW the different codes denote different ratios (among other things) as that gear box was fitted to many Peugeot / Citroen model small cars & vans with differing engine sizes & power and different sized wheels

When under load either accelerating or decelerating its a really loud bearing noise.

Put it in neutral it doesnt do it.

Dip the clutch when driving the noise goes away.


Yes I did replace the clutch at the same time.

I did have a read of your gearbox strip down but its beyond my skills. Do you offer a rebuild service as I have my old gearbox with the same symptoms but not as bad?

Could be diff, or input / output brgs. Does it change in pitch with different gears?
I can rebuild it. It depends how quickly you want it. I'm around the Solent half the week but this would be a workshop job back in Reading.

No pitch change in different gears.

How long would it take to do?

Wouldnt mind waiting a few weeks if needs be as atleast I would know it was good.

Price depends on what needs changing. I repair your box rather than offer service exchange. Worst case is your box is beyond repair due to major damage to gearclusters or casings , but that is rare.
Repair time is about 3-4 hrs work. The issue is when I could fit it in. If you can wait til after Easter, it takes the pressure off a bit.

Any idea roughly on cost (Just a ball park figure)

There are about 11 bearings in there that vary from a few quid to about £40, so without taking it apart, it would be a complete guess. I can strip it and then give you a much better idea of what the cost is likely to be.
It would cost £35 to strip it far enough to assess a cost and you can decide if you want it done or not.

I am about to sell the car to my brother inlaw so want it to be good but dont want to spend the earth lol

If you think its worth doing that kit how much to strip and rebuild the box?

Yes I can do that. Take it you will be supplying this kit?
Strip and rebuild would be £100- £140 depending on time.
Can you return the kit if Gearbox turns out to be U/S?

I think the best thing to do is give you the box to strip so I know if its worth doing or not.
