Engine running on

Post by Slo »

Bit of an odd problem developed on my cc, I took the key out the other day and the engine continued to run and the speedo/instrument panel started flashing including the multi function display for about 10 seconds.

Tonight it has done it again but no flashing dash, has anyone come across this before?

Apart from this it runs spot on.

This idea could be way-out, but the ignition key "ON" is actually several separate switches, and it could be that they did not all open immediately when you switched to off.

Hi, My 206 developed a problem in which d engine is running fine, but the electrical aspect of the car will trip off and on again by itself and the engine will still be running fine. I tried our local maintenence garage, but we cudnt find d problem. Everything will go off including A.c, Radio, lights... everything, except that the engine is still on.
I look forward to hearing the cause of the problem. Thanks

@ Abusiddiq: It would be worth checking that the shunt in the BSI (dashboard fusebox) is secure and making good contact (check for corrosion).

EDIT: Also check the BSI connectors for corrosion and firm seating.

Slo, is it running normally when it runs on or is it "dieseling"? (horrible knocking noise-preignition)
Cheers Col.

I know what you mean Col and no mate it runs spot on at all times even when its running on, infact the enginebis the only part of this car ive not had trouble with "yet".

Its not done it since those two times which is a bit unearthing as its probably going to manifest again when im likely to be on my own, a gazillion miles from home and no phone. :hmm:

I had the bsi out when i first got the car and stripped it down, there was nothing wrong with it anywhere physically except the tang that holds the 4 pin plug in from the ignition switch loom had broken out, other than that its fine. Electrically is a different matter but it all checks out on pp apart from my sidelights flicker occasionally and the front os sidelight lights up when i brake occasionally

Slo, I don't think your problem has anything to do with the BSI.

In your case, I think the ignition key is switching off power to the BSI, so the body electrics are cut off, but the supply to the engine ECU is being maintained until the spring force eventually overcomes the sticky mechanism in the ignition key barrel.

You could try puffing some graphite powder lubricant into the key slot and working the switch a bit - don't use WD40 as it leaves a sticky residue.

The ignition is last in line on the switch, well actually the starter circuit is. It is a set of brushes on gold tracks so when you turn it off there's no way the ignition switch can remain in the on position unless its fallen apart internally, its spring loaded.

I suspect its something to do with wiring and earths, particularly as i had the lights heater and rear window demister on at the time which will have warmed up some wires. Either that or it really is a bsi problem.

If it happens again I will remove the ignition switch and dissect it.

Thanks for your response... i checked all d connections in bsI unit, and everything seemd fine... i also checked d ignition which is till confirmed to be working just fine. I dont know if a faulty sensor can cause d problem. I also notice the fuel guage is not given correct readings. Thanks all

The plot thickens, I have discovered that its not random at all.

If I leave the lights on and hold the brake pedal down it keeps running when I take the key out.

Only taking my foot off the pedal or turning lights off kills it, this also applies to the radio and everything else.

What the hell can cause that???

Sounds like some kind of back feed??

Humour me here, try taking out 1 bulb at a time and see if it stops it happening. Start with o/s brake light bulbs and earths
