Boot rattling

Post by SiHolmes »

Hi guys,

Been lurking for a while, and found much good advice in here, thanks. I have a 2004 2.0 allure, and recently noticed a rattle from the boot. Having removed the golf clubs, the jack, and reading a few posts in here, it pointed at the boot latch. Had a look today, and yep, one side of it moves up and down freely, so probably needs tightening. I've noticed though, that the wire going into it seems to be free of contact with anything else, if I pull it to one side, the interior boot light comes on, so I'm guessing the fixing for it has come lose/broken. Can anyone point me at a picture of how the electrics should plug together in there? Going to attempt to tighten it all up, but at first glance, it looks like something may have broken free in there.

Thanks

Si

That boot latch connector is for the boot open warning on the center of the dash and the alarm.

The latch mechanism is a bad design, strong springs pulling against plastic inevitably wears it away then you get non stop boot open warnings and an annoying alarm that likes to go off whenever you aren't near it, which is probably why its disconnected.

The boot light switch is actually a tilt switch inside the bootlid itself.

You need to put threadlock on the bolts to stop them undoing again.

Thanks Slo, that would make sense. It does look like a weak point. I'll see what I can do with it at the weekend and let you know.

Well, I tightened it all up, and the net result is that the rattling is worse than ever... Great. Looking at it again, looks like the catcher plate once had a plastic coating to hold the boot lid down, thats now perished, so looks like metal on metal is the problem. I don't see a way of replacing it, without replacing the whole mechanism, so next step I think is tape, and plenty of it...
