Another newbie

Morning!
So in my infinite wisdom I decided we need another car as doing social stuff in a Transit isn't wholly acceptable sometimes, and anyway, our daughter is coming back from travelling southeast Asia and will need to use the family car.
My excuse, anyway.
So after trawling Autotrader and the Web in general with not much money to spare (thanks, MrsP), I now appear to be the owner of a 2004 1.6S. With some big miles on it
Background - I was 20 years in the motor trade with BT before I figured it was much easier to work in an office telling people what to do, rather than crawling around under cars and lorries getting dripped on - so I know my way around
Nothing onerous on the test drive other than one tyre, and needs a new back box (hello Eurocarparts. ...)

So, I have no doubt we'll be getting more aquainted - the only thing that really niggles in the back of the mind is this pollution control warning thing - I had it on a 406 I had, and never got to the bottom of it - how common is it? And any other niggley bits I need to be aware of before I start going all Basil Fawley on it?

Welcome to the 206cc forum Colin. Sounds as if you've bought a hatchback rather than a convertible so you might like to look at the other forum http://www.206info.co.uk/

As for the pollution warning it could be as simple as the car just being used for short runs and not getting fully warmed up. In that case a long run could well put the warning out. However, if there is a fault with the exhaust that you already know about then that is probably causing the antipollution warning to come on. Repair the exhaust and the warning should disappear in due course. Use decent fuel too - I never use supermarket stuff.

Otherwise you'll probably find that a sensor needs replacing. If a lambda sensor in the exhaust system detects unburnt hydrocarbons it will put the antipollution warning up. If the sensor itself plays up it will need replacing. Of course, if the catalytic converter has had its day then you'll need a new one of those.

Oh no, it's definitely a convertible, Ron.... Complete with working roof. Interesting to watch a video on YouTube about how it works - I used to work on hydraulics so it all makes sense, but there's an awful lot if interlocks, isn't there?
There's no warnings as yet, it was more "just in case" as it seems to be mentioned regularly.
Hopefully it'll be a lot of fun and not much swearing. I sold a 75 MGB last year as it was starting to get to the "should I buy a MIG welder" stage - I'd just like some fun motoring now
