Gearbox Problems.......

I'm typing this as a complete noob and with no mechanical knowledge at all (so please forgive my phrasing)
I have recently purchased a second hand Peugoet 206 LS (Auto)
I am in love with Peugeot's already! But it seems to have problems going from Park to drive, it lets me engage it on the selector but doesn't seem to engage first gear some of the time...... I have tried going back to park then drive again, I even tried switching off engine and waiting a few seconds (mush to the dismay of the Q of traffic behind me
In the end it just clears itself and is ok again, this has only just started happening in the last day or so and is very worrying.

The first thing to check is that the box has the correct level of fluid - too much is as bad as too little. Go to http://www.peugeot206cc.co.uk/repair-206/, then MECHANICAL/TRANSMISSION/GEARBOX/PRESENTATION AL4..../Draining and Topping up the oil.

Use only ESSO or Mobil (same thing) LT71141. Don't use other brands which claim to be compatible - they probably are not.

If that does not help, some people are lucky enough to cure a problem by changing the fluid in the box. It is not possible to completely change the fluid without removing the box, as the drain does not empty the TC, but it would be worth a try.

If still no luck, one thing you could try yourself is selecting first - either putting the selector to 1, or to 2 and pressing the button for 1 (depending on the age of the car), or selecting M if you have the Tiptronic type. If that works, it would suggest an electrical problem in the selector; if not, it's a deeper problem, probably best addressed by an auto transmission specialist who is familiar with the AL4, and has the diagnostic equipment required. Most Peugeot dealers will just fit a replacement box.

This is likely to be expensive, so if you bought the car with a warranty, take it back.
